Schnitzel's SPS

Do your Acro's argue over encrusting space. I have a few that are attacking each other.

Snapped a couple pics. Enjoy [emoji1305]

Well cyano is growing like crazy on my sandbed. Stays away from rocks and any corals, but it's a terrible eye sore. I finally starting running gfo thinking it might help, but after testing phosphates I'm not sure it will. :/

Hannah is so inconsistent, it gave me a reading of 5 and 9. So my phosphates are between .015 and .027.

Its because Cyano is uptaking the phosphate. By the time you test, it'll read very low, doesn't mean you might not have a phosphate issue. I'd run the GFO for a few months and see what happens.

FWIW, phosphate meter has a +/- of 0.04 ppm. We're taking hobby grade kits here.

Yea that's why I never test phosphates.

Second week running gfo, like you said I will keep running it consistently for a few months and see what happens. I'm even considering changing my light cycle, maybe that + phosphates is contributing to cyano growth.

Or just take the dang sand bed out. No sand bed looks nicer than a sandbed full of cyano. :/

Beautiful tank!! Nice pictures! Love the side shots of the tank, great color.

I think the GFO combined with using red slime remover is an excellent way to get rid of the immediate issue of Cyano on the sandbed while getting rid of the source issue as well.

What light cycle are you running these days?

I do enjoy my sandbed/beach in SPS dominant tanks. I think its a nice contrast to all the stick colonies to have a nice clean sandbed below for visual impact.

I remember when I was dealing with dinos my no3 was close to 0 and po4 was .02. After I killed it with peroxide, I tested nutrient levels and got 8~ no3 and po4 went up to .07. I was amazed how well that stuff sucks up nutrients. I'm sure cyano is the same way.

One tidbit of advice I use with the Hannah ULR Phosphorus checker to help get more consistent results is to use any hard water stain cleaner to clean the vial before testing. It gets any water stains or leftover residue etc off the inside of the curvet.

Reason why I raise my glass vials with ro/di water.
