Hi I’m a high schooler who wants to make a reef tank at my school for a marine class. I was wondering what would be the best equipment for a low maintenance tank. The goal of the tank is to teach my fellow classmates about reefs and give them hands on experience with a reef instead of reading about them.

Depending on your budget and amount of space, I think a tank somewhere between 20 and 40 gallons would be perfect. Light with black box LEDs and do easy corals, mostly soft and LPS. Stock light on fish.

My best bet would to get a all in one system with low stocking and use snails and cleaner shrimp also try to do frequent water changes so you don’t have to dose anything and have stuff on timers like your lights for example but for clean water use chemi pure blue I’ve had very good success with it good luck

An Innovative Marine Nuvo Fusion 20 would be good with a couple of clowns. Someone would have to come in during the summer or take it home with them for those months.

this is actually the tank I’m going to use. It was originally for growing abalone and releasing them.

How many gallons in total ?
What are the dimensions?
What is your budget?
What are you planning on keeping in the tank ?

I think it’s around 30” by 24” by 8”. 24 ish gallons. I would like it to be as cheep as possible but still look good.

I would like to stock softy’s and lps. In the tank

this is about the simplest tank I've seen. I'd like to set something like this up in my kitchen with maybe one of those Lifegard angled tanks or an IM 10 gal.
