Schooling Bannerfish - Reef Safe?

I'd like to buy a Schooling Bannerfish (aka Heniochus; False Moorish Idol). I've read some accounts that say these fish are definitely reef safe; some accounts that say they are sometimes reef safe; and some accounts that say they will destroy coral. What am I to believe?? Do you have any experience with these fish? Are they a good fish to keep? Can you have just one?

I had one in my mixed reef with no issues. I will not buy another as it seemed to die randomly. It ate like a pig and showed no signs of stress.
