While my tank is in fallow I am trying to think of what I would improve on my fish collection. Mainly a small group of peaceful schooling fish would be great. I did do a search here and generally found blue green chromis or cardinalfish to be popular. Are there any other colorful fish you all can think of. Thanks, Ricn

A trio of yellow assessors would be nice. I have one and really like him. Anthias are attractive fish but might not have enough swim room in a 54g. You could try chromis but it is difficult to keep the aggression down amongst them, few people have long term success keeping multiples. For cardinals you could look at the yellow striped, blue eyed, or pajamas. Bangaiis form pairs when mature and do not tolerate other cardinals.

Queen anthias are very colorful and they do school. I only have 2 but will be getting more soon. You can see the two here. They are bright purple with a brilliant yellow stripe. Their colors are muted in this video

I thought anthias are too small for a reefer 250. I love them but la says they need a bigger tank.
I do have one yellow assessor. Not sure if he would like 2 more joining him?

I thought firefish only got along singly or in in mated pairs but since you cant tell them apart sexually it is hard

Check out blue eyed cardinals. They don't weed each other out like other cardinals.

You would be correct.
As for the assessors, you said your going fallow right? You could add all 3 to the tank at the same time.

I only have one assessor. What about Blue Gudgeon Dartfish (Trio)
(Ptereleotris heteroptera) they are always sold as a trio at divers den. I might wait for later anyways as my qt tank is quite full but I just want to plan my next group of fish and want it to be a schooling fish. thanks

In my previous 175g I had 6 blue gudgeons. Planning another group in my upcoming build. Mine didn't "school" but they did stay pretty close together.

cool i like their color as well. its weird that those and maybe the zebras are the only ones that seem to be able to live with co specifics

I have a trio of bicolor anthias and a trio of lyre tail anthias. They don't really school persay, but they are very active and extremely colorful. Not sure the size of your tank... but they are great!

What size tank? How are their temperaments amongst another and others in the tank?
