I know school is out but I’m looking for some small fish that will school together. I’ve heard that chromis school together. Are there any other reef safe fish that will school together in a tank?????

Youd have to have an extremely large tank for banggais not to kill each other. And dont try striped cardinal fish either...now that mine are mature they only play nice when theyre holding eggs.

In our tanks very few fish remain tightly grouped and either spread out or bully the others. There are more options for loose groups, like allens damsels but the long spine cardinal fish does live in groups pretty well but tend to spread out after a few years.

We had 150-200 bangaii cardinals in a tank once and as they matured they began to pair off and try to kill the others. These were bangaii we bred ourselves but they were still very aggressive.

I have had good luck with Anthias Squamipinnis, 2 males and 6 females. The difficulty is their need to eat well several times per day and they are quite passive in competing for food. Nitrates will rise and biofiltration needs a bit more umph.

Not sure about how reef safe. I had about 60 some mollies that I put in my 140 gallon tank. Spreads out any aggression and they make a nice school.

If you have a large tank monos will school.

Zebra and scissortail dartfish are social and peaceful.

Randalls and dispar anthias stay social a bit better than most other commonly available anthias.

Lepidozygous are pretty social.

Bangaii’s kill each other off until the are down to a pair

I think that depends on the size of the DT. I've been able to keep a group of 5 for about 7 months (so far!) in a 600g. In my 90g a few years back I started with 5 and ended up quickly with 2. I also keep 8 Blue/Green Chromis and 7 Lyre Tail Anthias. I would not say they "school" but rather that they "scholl" (stay together in the tank).

mid agree with that. If they have enough space to stake out their own territory you may get away with it but the vast majority of people don’t have a big enough tank for that. I know my 210g wasn’t big enough for more than 2. I’m my tank the female even killed the male that she spawned with after spawning do now I just have one. I’m going to try to add a male offspring back to the tank once they grow a little more.

Chromis are a poor choice as they often pick each other off over time anyways. I would look into Zebra Barred Dartfish or Scissortail Dartfish (a trio of them) as that will probably be your best bet.

I've had longterm success getting blue green chromis to school regularly in my 120. I found it helps to have a couple damsels with them to lightly harass them back into their shoaling groups.

has anyone tried a decent sized group of meiacanthus blennies? DD always offers them in trios so i wonder how they'd do if there were like 10 of them
