Are there any fish with a similar personality trait to chromis and still a schooling fish I want to introduce some personality to my tank

Hi Cameron_,

I would highly suggest Banggai Cardinalfish. They are far less aggressive than Chromis, are similarly sized, and are excellent schoolers. They have a fun personality and like to swim around in a jolting fashion that is super fun to watch.

Drop a like if this helps!

Bimaculatus anthias and blue/green Chromis are good.

A more boring option for smaller tanks would be cardinal fish or pajama cardinal
Fish.

Fish really do not school in home aquaria. Some species will shoal. Chromis will do this but they tend to murder each other which puts a damper on things. Some of the cardinals will shoal. And anthias will shoal.

Anthias or Cardinals such as pajama or flame cardinal.
rare that they school in general- more of hanging out together

Bangaii cardinals only live in groups as juveniles. When they mature, they form m/f pairs and get aggressive.

Anthias and fusilier damsels live in groups.

Our reef fish don't school like tetras, for example.

I think Monos at least shoal, but you would need a very large tank.
Good one. I've seen some successful groups of those in largish tanks.

The flagtail, Kuhlia mugil, will actually school, but is pretty active and gets 6-8". They display well at pubic aquariums.

Best bet for fish schooling is chromis if you have a large tank. Nothing else will really act the same, but you might have success with some smaller fishes schooling or at least shoaling together. Research these:
-Eviota gobies (specifically the ones biota have)
-Neon gobies (very small groups, more equivalent to cory cat type schooling if comparing to FW)
-Zebra dartfish (these are more active but mostly just hover)
-Red spot cardinals (these kind of look and act like tetras but are bigger and thus don't school in the same size tanks as tetras would)

These ones won't school but live in colonies and character to a tank
-Green-banded gobies (these will sit on the bottom or rocks in clusters and zip up for food)
-Barnacle blennies (similar to above but live in tiny holes or empty barnacle clusters)
-Clownfish! Often in the wild clowns live in small colonies. This is not impossible in a tank especially if you have a big anemone or euphyllia or something. Make sure the ones you get are introduced together otherwise the newer ones will probably be ostracized from the group.
