If you are a lover of Scolymia, you've probably noticed that we've "reloaded" our Scoly collection with some of the consistently nicest specimens that we've seen in years! It's important to not, however, that not all Scolys on the market are of the same quality. There are some notable differences in the specimens that we offer, all of which will contribute greatly to your likelihood of success with them.
First and foremost, our Scolys are collected for us by one of the most experienced, conscientious, and sustainability-minded collectors in Australia. He has decades of experience, and knows exactly how to collect, handle, and ship these corals to avoid damaging them during the process. We have been working with him for many years, and have established an excellent working relationship with him. We know exactly who collects our Aussie corals! This is in far contrast to Scolys from other Indo Pacific sources that may be haphazardly collected by people who really don't have the experience, skill, and conscientious attitude required.
Our Solys are not just hacked off the reef, thrown in a bag, and tossed in a box on the next plane to LA. Rather, they are carefully collected, in compliance with the regulations set forth by the Australian government, and allowed to acclimate in a controlled environment prior to shipping. They are inspected, cared for, and in excellent shape when they make the overnight direct flight to Los Angeles, where our facility is located.
Upon arrival, we don't just unbox them, throw them in a raceway and place them up for sale. Rather, we inspect, acclimate, dip, quarantine, and observe each and every one. We make sure that the corals are stabilized, well fed, and in good health before we ever even think of placing them on our site for sale. It's not the most inexpensive, profit-minded way...but it is the CORRECT way to handle these precious corals.
As a customer, you're assured of purchasing a Scoly that is well fed, well-adjusted to captivity, and in the best possible health before you ever have the chance to purchase it. This process can take weeks, or even a month or more, but it's worth it. We don't take chances with poor quality specimens, sketchy suppliers, and "fast-buck" practices. We think that our customers would rather pay a bit more for a coral that has been properly handled all along the chain of custody from reef to aquarium.
Our prices reflect, among other things, the relative rarity, quality, and difficulty in obtaining each specimen. They are not simply jacked up to create a feeding frenzy. Some of these pieces are quite expensive, and me be in our possession for weeks or even months before they are sold. We are not in a rush to get them out of our systems before they die...We just don't lose that many. In fact, in the year that we've been operating out of our L.A. facility, I can only recall two that did not make it, and one may have been inadvertently damaged, which contributed to the loss. We take the husbandry of Scolys- and all of our corals- very seriously. If you're going to fork out your hard-earned cash for a coral, it needs to be perfect. And of course, we stand behind each and every coral with our guarantee.
