Picked up a scoly with mouth in tact but 3/4 of it has receded leaving a large amount of skeleton behind. The skeleton is mostly algae covered, no hair or bubble. After doing some research I might be best off to trim the skeleton down. Seeing if anyone had any recommendations for cutting the skeleton without a band saw? Can I use standard bone clippers? Or anyone use anything else? Much appreciate any help, I'll post a picture tomorrow during day light

Meant to say that I got it from a shop yesterday in hopes of rescue

+ 1 right now cause no more stress. I would also suggest placing it in ideal conditions - put on bottom in a place with medium indirect flow and light, feed it and hope for the best. It is obviously stressed, perhaps diseased, and needs time and water conditions to heal - if it can. Also, look carefully for any signs of infection, etc.

Good luck

It ate a couple pieces last night, just concerned that the skeleton is too crusted over in algae growth for the scoly to grow back over

IF you see any brown jelly like then you need to soak in an antibiotic or lugols for a bit, but looks like just needs time and love. Feed every four days or so. Should recover with time.

This is tough, that's a lot of recession. Once there that far gone it's a challenge. If it has a feeding response then feed it small meaty bits or oyster feast and reef roids. Nothing to big. Good advice has been given in this thread, hope it recovers for you. I always say if there's flesh there's hope.

Ah yes reef roids is a good idea. Forget about that one. Thanks for the help all will post some pictures one way or another

Post is from 3 years ago so not sure you will get response.

I had a scoly that was stung by a torch. A portion of its perimeter receded. Was able to save and get back to normal by doing 2 things. At night, 1) feed Red Sea AB+ to get scoly to expose feeders, and 2) feed brine shrimp and mysis while the feeders were active. Amazing to see these scoly’s eating. Feed once a week. Took about 2 months for scoly to regain tissue that was lost from torch sting.
