So I just bought my first scolymia the other day and have a couple questions for all the scolymia experts out there. First does it need to be in a shaded area or can it be in direct light? I also have very fine sand and it seems like there is always sand resting in the mouth of the scolymia. Is this harmful to them and should I move to a area of less flow?

To answer your placement question it really depends on how deep your tank is, I have a 30 in deep tank and mine is in direct light.
As far as the sand issue goes I would try to avoid it if possible. If sand gets in its mouth it can damage it pretty bad. I lost one because of this.

You will be fine placing it in direct light, I keep mine under radios XR-30 pros at 90% intensity

make sure its secure if you put it on the rock. If it falls the tissue could get damaged leading to a potential infection. As far as I know the only lps that like the sandbed are fungia plates and open brain corals

I have a pair of them. one is an alien eye and the other is a crushed velvet red. the red one is new. I bleached out my alien eye with it in direct light under my radion in a 20" deep tank, so I have moved it to a much more shady spot. the issue I am facing is the red one does not inflate near like the alien eye. It looks very retracted as opposed to the other one which is big and fat. i had both in the shade but have moved the red out into more light to see.

That velvet is sweet. Like the alien eye too. Dont ever see to many of those. Heres my warpaint. First pic is day i got it, second is recent, after a feeding,a bit editted by brightening it up a bit, but i plan to collect some niceeeeee scolys. But they get up there lol

has anyone ever saved one? I have a bleeding apple I got last year at reef a palooza, did fine for the longest then just started to go downhill, I found out it getting sand in it a lot and I think it stressed it, I have moved it around a few times and is now on the rocks. its still alive but very receded and has no feeding response anymore. What should I do???
