Scopas? Hybrid? ID please

Just wondering if this is normal coloring or more yellow than typical. Searching photos came up inconclusive.

Looks a bit like a yellow and a scopas mix. But could just be an undeveloped scopas. What is the size of the tang. Where did you get it from? Very Cool! Keep us updated!

I don’t have it, he is at LFS, and tiny. 2-3” so that suggests undeveloped? I don’t know anything about their coloring trends, just didn’t think they were so yellow.

Hello,

doent look like a regular scopus to me. As mentioned above it may be undeveloped. At night my scopus looses the dark color but is more white-ish then yellow ish.

I’m leaning towards a hybrid, which is pretty cool. But I’m no expert, just throwing my two cents out there.

I've never seen one that looks like that, but I would get him if I could just to see if he changes or if he’s a “one of a kind” - but in any case, thanks for sharing. He (Or she) is pretty cool

I think @najer has a bit of experience with very small scopas tangs, what do you make of this little fish?

I have a scopas and the snout looks blunter than that little guy’s. I looked online and if you compare the yellow and the scopas the difference in their snouts is obvious. I think that one is a hybrid. Young scopas have a very prominent division in their colors. Light up front and very dark in the back half.

I was looking at a pair of Scopas just yesterday at my LFS both were under 3" and neither looked like that, my uneducated guess would be hybrid

No expert, but my best guess is a hybrid because of the paler yellow front part of the fish. If it was a scopas it would be a pale tan. Spots all over indicate a bit of Scopas but the yellow would seem to be Yellow tang. Where did your LFS say they got it from? If you did end up buying it it is very skinny and would need to be beefed up a bit lol. Here is a picture of a hybrid I found off the web that looks similar to yours:

It is possible it is a hybrid or it could well be a yellow / xanthic scopas, I have a scopas scopas and a yellow scopas.
