Scratching PBT

tried getting him out but too quick.
You’ll probably have to get him out anyway for quarantine, so there are various methods you can try to use catch it that are available across this forum (some methods easier and more effective than others…)

For now, however, you can probably monitor the tang’s condition. If it worsens, though, you may want to consider the causes as well as active treatments.

Mucus plugs will do that. Here is an article about that:

(its the PDF link on the right side).

More dots/spots today on body and around nose. still scratching and head shaking. The small yellow tang and two clowns seem fine. I guess its ich at this point. Prazipro won't control that correct? This is a new tank that will have corals eventually so I don't want to use copper correct? Should I try again to get him out, or at this point all the fish need to bet treated?

Correct - prazi won’t help with ich and you cannot treat your display with copper if invertebrates are present. There is often no solution but to set up a treatment tank and use copper. You can try searching the forum for “ich management” but that doesn’t always work well.

Yup. Gotta get him out somehow.

Hi Jay, So I never ended up taking the PBT out because he kept eating and nothing else in the tank got it. As of a couple days ago he's not showing any signs of anything on his body and he's stopped scratching. Is it likely he cured himself or do you think it will come back? And if it doesn't come back, how long should I wait to add more fish? Thanks!

Assuming this is ich, the disease will only come back in larger numbers, as they drop off to breed in the sandbed. Take this opportunity to remove the fish while there is no active infection, that way treating them is easier. If you wait too long, there will likely be consequences.

Well that's not what I wanted to hear. Bummer. I'm running a large UV so I was hoping it was helping. What if it is something else like a fluke?

It all depends on what else you're keeping in the tank. Medicines like PraziPro can treat flukes, however can have lasting effects on certain invertebrates, particularly feather duster worms. It is generally considered reef safe, though.

Ok. Thanks again for the info.

Well, I guess we never did determined if this was ich, flukes or mucus plugs. The last one is due to some irritation and it can go away on its own. Flukes can exist as a chronic infection, but you would still see scratching. Ich can come and go (the ich management I mentioned).
I wouldn’t do anything unless you see symptoms - but also don’t add any new fish for a month, just to be see safe.
