I got a very sad reminder about the necessity of a good top (especially with wrasses). I have acrylic/screen lids from Octoaquatics and they work and look great. Unfortunately while I had one of my tops off for feeding I heard a splash and saw a projectile launch out of and behind the tank almost in the middle. At first, I thought it was one of my zebra barred gobies but a quick look showed that they were all present and accounted for. Unfortunately it was my diamond tail flasher wrasse! He was in a spot that I couldn't reach him through the stand or from the side. My tank is only about 5-6" from the wall.

My wife held a flash light as I used my 30" tongs to as gently as possible scoot him closer to a place where I could reach over the sump and grab him. All this seemed to take an eternity but was probably only about 5 minutes. I immediately cradled him in my hand and held him head first in front of a power head to get water flowing over his gills. About 30 seconds later I felt him wiggle a little and in another couple of minutes he swam out of my hand. At first he fell to the bottom and lay there in stress coloration but eventually started swimming around a little. I had high hopes he would make it but unfortunately I found him dead this morning.

A perfect storm as there was only about a foot and a half area he could have jumped to where I couldn't have gotten to him immediately. This has me wondering about what I could have done to prevent it and so far I haven't come up with any ideas.

Bottom line, get lids if you don't have them. Be alert when your lids are off for jumpers! This isn't just for wrasses although they are among the most likely to vault out of your tank. Any fish can and will jump under the right circumstances.

Sorry for your loss. Having 2 Diamond Tail Flasher wrasses myself, I have noticed they are very twitchy to say the least.

I’m sorry. You did everything you could and more. Never easy to loose a fish.
thanks for the reminder. Tops are one of the few things I think we don’t talk about a lot

Sorry for your loss, it must have been extremely frustrating to not be able to grab him real quick :(

Could you have some kind of acrylic shield built to fit between the wall and the back of your tank?

Yes I agree screens are essential. I learned that lesson the hard way too & had a screen ever since.

I am sorry to hear this. I would be devastated to loose my Diamond Tail wrasse this way. I recently lost my Naoko wrasse. My tank have two screens, one on each side of the center brace. I am a short person, only 5'4" and the tank top is 6'4". I n the AM I often mixed the food and lift the lid to poor in the food. My wrasse must jumped as I lifted that top and landed on top of the screen on the other side. In the afternoon, I found a very fat but very dry Naoko Wrasse on top of the screen.
I cannot believe that wrasse. The only wrasse that I ever lost to jumping.

I'm sorry for your loss. Thank you for the reminder to add lids and make sure that they are securely covering the tank.

That's a great idea! Maybe I can put a simple L bracket on the wall and let the near side rest on the rim of the tank. Maybe a screen from aluminum from the hardware store! Does window screen frame come in 6' lengths?

You can find window screen frame on Amazon up to 6' but there is a big price jump from 5' to 6'. Most hardware stores carry 4' and maybe 5' lengths.

Tough break. Did everything you could. I lost my flasher wrasse while I had my lid removed during a water change. Went to dump water and never gave it a second thought to check for him when I came back. Found him behind the tank later that night.

Sorry for your loss. Same happened to me about 1 1/2 yrs ago with a snowflake eel. Only I didn’t find it till the next day. My 150 sits 3” from the wall. The eel was only about 10”

Sorry for your loss man, that’s definitely a tough one to lose. Maybe this thread can be utilized for people to share any companies they have worked with that can create custom lids? Personally my cycling tank will need one (eurobraced, no canopy) and I plan for a wrasse dominant tank. Hope that didn’t sound rude, just thinking your post could help others (present company included) get something they’re happy with while keeping their jumpers contained.

Just lost my ywg last night. Found him on the floor this morning. I need a lid but my tank is rimless and I’m having trouble finding one. I’m just glad it wasn’t one of my clowns :(

That's a great idea. My lids are by Octoaquatics.

Other options that I also think are great include Artfully Acrylic, Top Lids
