We have a tiny ocellaris that seems obsessed with hosting in the overflow given it is a fairly gentle current in there, was wondering if anyone has tried to use a mesh of sorts to prevent this? And if so how well did it work? My main concern is detritus and the like clogging the overflow up if I restrict it with a mesh, or the mesh coming loose and floating off, breaking down, etc etc. Maybe a modified filter sock? Once was ok, but this is the 4th time in a week I have had to get in there with a net and catch the little guy, and all the other small fish have been fine. I have sat now and watched this little shi...fish literally get dropped in the tank and swim right back over to the overflow and go in after I have 'freed' him. If he keeps it up I am at a loss aside from just letting him grow large enough in there to not be able to fit, then moving him back to the display, or possibly moving him to the sump refugium so I can keep an eye on him.

You could get a piece of what BRS calls Aqua Mesh and cut it to fit in the overflow. It flows water pretty well. I would be sure to check it each day just in case. In a few weeks the fish should not be able to squeeze thru the overflow slots. Mesh Gutter Guard can also be used. Its stiff and can be formed to fit .
