Scripps water questions

Curious, did you ever get the ICP test done and do you still use the Scripps water? I’m considering trying it.

There are some helpful thread off sdreefs that go into Scripps in depth including testing and how some locals bump up alk. The site has been hit/miss lately (currently a miss) but once it is running (later today) I’ll edit this post with the link.

Does Scripps use this water in their systems? If so, I would use it any time.

I've been using it since I started my first tank in January. The tap is at the back of the parking lot between the NOAA fisheries science center and the W. M. Keck Foundation Center for Ocean-Atmosphere Research on LA Jolla Shores drive. I've been filling up a 6 gallon carboy and keeping it in my garage for a month or so with no problems.

i have a nano so I don't need a lot of volume. For rodi I've been using aquatics warehouse and filling up another carboy.


So far it's been fine. And free! I've never seen anyone else getting water. Ph has been right around 8, alkalinity at 9-10 dkh, salinity at 1.026.

i use it on all my tanks and have for last 2 ish years
never tested anything but salinity and always been fine

I live 10 minutes away from Scripps and I'm staring a new nano tank. I'm so tempted to grab sand from the shore, place it in a mesh bag and add it to my rear AIO chamber to help it cycle. What do you guys think?
I would rinse the sand profusely with fresh mixed salt water before adding it.

I say why not. But rinse it in scripts water. Why waste on mix.

The water is fine I've been using it for over 20 years. I put it in a Brute garbage can, bring it up to temp, aerate it and raise the alkalinity. pH is usually low, 7.8 typically and alkalinity is 7.8 as well. I'm using laboratory grade testing equipment that's calibrated. Depending on the time of year I also run a HOB skimmer on the container before I put in my tanks.

The sand will be full of all the surface pollution that wave action has brought to the shore. Avoid it and buy live sand collected correctly in the tropics.

I'm not sure how it is done around the source of Scripps water but when I used to collect NSW from Monterey I'd look at the water quality and see if there are any warnings. There are beach advisories which helps us pick our diving locations when doing beach dives. I used the similar approach when collecting the water. Scripps may not have that issue or the pipe(s) / inlet is out far enough that it is a moot point. About the only thing I would be aware of before collection.

Other than that people have been using Scripps for years. Wish we had something like this near the Bay Area or in Monterey. This is very helpful to us hobbyist when we are in the heavy drought years. RODI is wasteful, or can be, so this is nice for those able to collect, and store.
