Is it ok to scrub green hair algae off of a rock even if you don't physically pull it out of tank? Seems like it will just regrow somewhere unless it is completely removed? Or am I being silly?
I want to go at it with a toothbrush but is that a waste of time?

Best way would be to take the rock out and scrub it then put the rock back in. Or you could do it during a water change and syphon it out while you scrub

Taking it out would crash my scape but the syphon idea I will for sure try!

Tooth brush or OXO make a great small brush set. I would scrub the rock with the brush, since I have filter socks. I would let the algae collect in he filter socks. Then I would vacuum the sand durring my 10 % water change. Once the scrub and vacuum was done, I would replace the sock with clean sock.

I need to figure out filter socks ... feeling like I probably need them but have no clue. I knit my own socks ... wondering if I can knit these? ;)

There is how to's on YouTube on how to make socks. I got the idea from someone on here. I use a 4" pvc pipe with lots of holes in the bottom and place regular polyester filling in the bottom. Both of my overflow pipes lead to this setup. I have to change the polyester 2 times per week, buts it's way easier and cheaper to do that than mess with socks. Only down side is it doesn't catch really small particles, but it does catch a lot. Just make sure the polyester doesn't have any flame retardants in it. Easy set up. Costs $5 for the pvc and $3 for a year supply of polyester. Just make sure there is enough holes in the bottom quarter of the pvc to accommodate the flow and the top is lower than the top of your sump in case the polyester gets clogged tank water doesnt spill onto the floor.
