Sea Apple update

I put this in my build thread but decided I would like to give it its own section.

My sea Apple is a week or two old and has come a good way. At the lfs he was getting limited food but has had a constant supply of phyto since entering my tank. After I flipped his internal clock to feed at day and not night, he does show a great feeding response by constantly pulling his tentacles in and out his mouth. Also he has been pooping.

Currently I feed self cultured phyto but have decided to start using individual prepared cultures so that I can keep better documentation for my self.

Lastly, he does move around periodically but usually ends back up where he is in the attached photo.

Finally, when I purchased him he was more white, and while I thought this may be his natural color he has picked up more red in the past two weeks

I think they only release toxins when they are mad, uncomfortable or far into their death stage. While I'm going it won't die, if it does I imagine I should have plenty of time to pluck him out

Most of the flow comes from the pump return he's sitting on; however, I put a temporary one on my powerhead for the first week but took it off after he settled down as it was trapping food. While I know this is risky, I plan on making a more professional (non food trapping) one soon as I have the supplies already

Doing it through the return is totally the way to imo. Much safer. And you can upgrade the pump pretty cheaply and get a bigger one then split the return inlet with lok line. Basically a closed loop system almost.
You can and they did use that for whole reef tanks.

I had to do that in a jbj 28 for my jelly fish. But I had to fabricate a spray bar to create a large indirect flow. Still used a 1200 maxi jet. Now you can get the jebao D.C. Return pump.

I had one of these for~3 years back in the late '70s (first saltwater tank). Had it in a 35g hex tank and near the bottom where it was bathed by a HOB return flow. I fed a combo of frozen krill and enriched brine 2-3x/day and it was very, colorful, plump and healthy looking for the whole time.

Also remember that once initially settled, it never moved from it's rock perch. Guess it figured "I've got flow, I've got food...I'm good!"

I've been meaning to do this too. Thanks for reminding me. Being a college reefer I knew I would upgrade post-graduate and after moving out, Due to that reason, I have a 1200gph pump on my 50 gallon tank. While I obviously have it valved back, this makes it perfect for splitting and having two returns lines.

I wanted to add one of those upside down jellies too, but my lighting isn't up for that

Nice, this is my first reef tank too although it's its third theme. Nice to hear of success and I hope mine lives its whole life span (however long that is)

Fwiw I have a 5000 on my 55 the overflow is matched to the hob but it's still throttled way back.

Took the picture for another thread and thought I'd update here.

I have upgraded to a new food (Finally!!!) I have upgraded to brightwell Phytochrom and am getting more phyto/dose, I get my water murky in no time. On top of that, I have some golden pearls on the way (whoop whoop) that I will mix into the phytochrom mix. Last little update is I'm talking to brightwell to find the micron size of some of their other products to see if I can further the quality/amount even more.

I talked to a couple people over there. I haven't tried the pastes yet, just running through things now, but I did give the phyto-feast a shot. While it worked, I didn't get the pure amount of food I'm getting with this

A few frozen mixes have some of what you want as well.
Nitrima ova is one, if I hadn't mentioned it.
Indeed it to my x mas tree worms and nps and my mandarin.

I'll look it up, thanks. Since I've never heard of it, if I try it, it'll probably be closer to Christmas so that I'm home to catch a frozen foods package
