Sea hare question... should I be worried?

I recently bought 2 sea hares, a week apart. A small blue spot and a normal sea hare. They've both disappeared in my tank. No trace of them. I'm kinda perplexed because ones rather large and I dont have and spots in my tank to just vanish in for him. Any clues? Do they burrow in the sand? And if they did die how quick to decomposing are they? Because i would assume if they died i would see a body of sorts.

60 gallon cube, 2 hour drip acclimation, and live stock:
Fish are, 2 clowns, foxface, blenny, dottyback
Inverts, sandsifting star, fighting conch, hermits, snails, pom pom crab, and pistol shrimp.

I’m guessing they’re in hiding but if they were to die . The CUC would make a meal out of them

That's the thing, no body what so ever. I've looked in all cracks and crevices I can visibly see. But one is just to enormous to just disappear like this. I just added him yesterday to. Do they have a habit of crawling out the tank?

Sorry for the bad advice, They can burry in the sand and the don’t crawl out. If you just added yesterday give them time to come out

Ones been in for a week now, the other. Just a day. They were just so active at first then night came and poof disappeared. Should I worry about them dying in the sand bed? Since I cant monitor them. I hear the can crash tanks, also hear that's a myth to.

mine burrows in the sand but not all the way. About half covered. There camo is amazing and if your not very careful you'll just see rock and not hare.

They are nocturnal so look at light just before light outs.

I loose mine all the time and have it for about 6 months or a bit longer . shreck is huge and I still loose it in 80lbs of rocks.

how big is your tank?

I tried sea hares twice and both were active for a day then disappeared. Both were found dead days later and didn’t nuke the tank. I have a 55 gal. Hopefully yours are hiding but if they died then the CUC will take care of them or they’ll float into the open at some time in the future.

I only added the second because the first was no where to be found. I have plenty of green haire algea at the moment. If they both end up being alive I have no issue rehoming one. I hope they are not dead tho. But I have not seen any body's or CUC going to one area yet.

Question though, do they eat macro algea? I seem to have what I believe algea from my fuge growing in my tank and it would be nice if they eat that to

yes they do

they are great reef inhabitants. I run a very poor skimmer, a fluval fx4 canister filter and nutrient rich reef. The sea hare does a fine job of algea control .

Haha thank you! Hardly anyone gets it I feel like. And that makes me feel at ease. I hear they can be pretty sensitive so I hope they do well in my tank. Itll be a year old on July 4th. And would love the biodiversitie they add.

you did a better job at acclimation than I did they should do fine as long as water is stable

The more diverse algea they eat they are reported to do.

The most unstable thing is temp, fluctuates one degree every now and then. But everything else seems to be fine from it
