Hello everyone, I am very new to the whole saltwater aquarium thing but so far its been a blast. I've been getting my tank ready for what I always wanted, sea horses. They just look so cool and unique. Does anybody have any tips on sea horses or facts that I should know about before I actually purchase them?

I would not start a tank with sea horses. Make sure you can keep other fish in it without anything looking sick/dying before trying something harder, like sea horses. If the fish survive and do well you can remove them and turn it into your sea horse tank. I haven't kept them but a quick search got me to the article I saw on here but didn't read - https://www.reef2reef.com/forums/seahorse-pipefish/93353-intro-keeping-seahorses.html Enjoy!!

Hi, welcome to r2r!!! I wrote the article on Intro to Keeping Seahorses. There is a bunch of great info in it. On of the biggest issues with keeping seahorses is the temperature. It is very important to keep the tank cooler than a typical tank. I recommend 72 for most horses. Depending on the type of horses, you may have to keep it cooler. Also, you have to be very mindful of the other inhabitants in the tank. Seahorses should not be kept with aggressive fish, inverts or corals. I would recommend starting with a fish first and get the hang of monitoring the water quality first. When it is time to get the horses make sure to get captive bred horses that are trained to eat mysis. Good luck!!!

I was under the impression you can't add sea horses to a regular fish tank, it needs to be a sea horse tank only. Is that not the case? I fear the fish not welcoming the ponies into their territory :(

Need to be fed a lot, do not keep with any other livestock (mainly fish), can handle more flow than what most people believe, only order directly from a breeder.
