I got some sea lettuce in today from algae barn and it stinks. It looks perfectly healthy, but I wasn’t expecting it to make my office smell that bad. I work from home so I’m not sure I can deal with it. Is this a known issue?

It arrived perfectly healthy, not a rotten smell, just musty, green, wet carpet type of smell.

That's pretty weird. Usually when macro algae dies, it is stinky. I've had ulva before. Hardly any smell. Hopefully it clears up for you.

my ulva Algae Barn smelled awful as well. They said that ulva releases some compound during shipping and the smell will go away. After a day it had to go.

Now I have Red Ogo from ORA and it is SO MUCH better.

Thanks for the confirmation.

And if that weren’t bad enough, I have nuisance ulva in the display from just the few tiny bits that made it into the display. Ulva is the worst, IMO.

I couldn’t take it. I invested so much to make sure my office aquarium is as quiet as possible. The tank is extremely peaceful and rewarding. The smell made the entire room stink and I wouldn’t be able to concentrate.

I spent my night draining and cleaning my sump. It was a pain in the butt to get it all out. I even had to use a net to get a few pieces out of the display tank. It sucks being out $75. I’ll buy chaeto instead. I’m in another room and the smell still lingers. Gross.

Chaeto for sure does not stink. That is awful. Sounds like the equivalent of someone braking a rotten egg in the room. ;Inpain

Hope that smell goes away for you. I have no advice on how to remove it. Maybe an air purifier?

could be it just exerting what ever they was using to grow it with . I'm guessing these sellere are prob using a high dose of gunk to get this stuff to grow out fast.

prob the shiping water, happened to me too. as a tip, you can squeeze out your macro when you harvest for a food for microfauna and filter feeders

I have had ulva, chaeto, and red ogo.
  • Ulva is the worst of the three because it smells and it can invade your display. I would never recommend that anyone use it!
  • Chaeto is okay
  • Red ogo is my favorite if you can get large pieces. Algae Barn could not sell me larger pieces. So I ordered from ORA and I’m very happy.
Just like this and easy-peasy!

Did you find the ORA red ogo locally, or order from an online vendor?
