Now my observation is strictly based on anecdotal evidence, but, it seems to me that a lot of reef tanks that are within the vicinity of natural ocean salt spray have an issue with long term stability. The aquariums I have observed go through multiple nuisance algae infestations and never seem to "settle down". So I got to wondering if there might be an airborne bacterial spore being carried by the wind.

I did a little searching and came up with this; https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmicb.2019.01112/full

So there is obviously an effect, the extent of which I am not entirely sure of on our reef tanks. Anyone in the "spray zone" care to comment?

Well your going to have to define "a lot" and where exactly do you get your info from on all these unsetteled tanks across the coastal US? Do you have a spreadsheet for every tank someone has along the coast? Also, what is considered "spray zone"?

Like I said earlier this is all anecdotal and based solely on observation. I was just curious if anyone else here has noticed any correlation between proximity to the ocean amd long term stability.

A bit of a necro bump, but I kept a reef tank for six years while being a street over from the bay (Vine St in Los Osos). It was basically foggy and wet all the time. While it rusted the snot out of everything outside, including newer cars, I never had an algae issue. The house was far, far from airtight, too.

I also want to add that we used LFS water because our water was way too nutrient-laden even after our rodi system. Los Osos has some funky water!

Thanks for the report!
