Hello,

I have a 250 gallon system (Display tank is 190 gallons--i have had 2 MP40s on it for years but get lots of detritus and dead spots--one of the pumps finally really died--so rather than buy a new mp40 (NO CHEAP ENDEAVOR) i was going to get a sea swirl --i called Bulk Reef Supply to see if they carried it and they were negative on the sea swirl-they said it is dated technology and no one uses it any longer--can i please get some feedback on the sea swirl--any users out there that love it or hate it?
Any one out there have the sea swirl--love it ? hate it? opinions would be welcomed!

Thanks

Bette

I have a 270 gal that I use 4 sea swirls and 2 mp60’s. 2 swirls are hooked to a close loop and 2 off me return. I like them but would recommend a large return pump.

I’ve run 2 Seaswirls on my returns for around 20 years on my main display and love them. I wouldn’t call them dated technology. More like timeless. They are great devices that last a LONG time and have required little changes over the years to keep them current and long lasting. That said, keep in mind that Seaswirls create random movement at the surface where as power heads and your MP40’s keep the flow up in the middle of the water column or lower areas where the return pumps don’t impact much. So they kind of do 2 different things.

For detritus export, you really want flow down below to suspend the detritus while preventing it from settling and the random flow created by the Seaswirls at the surface will help send the detritus over the overflow. Good flow at all levels in the tank is the key.

See swirl sells 45’s and extensions to allow more flow in the middle to bottom of the tank. Something to look at but I wouldn’t solely just use sea swirls (depends on what you are keeping)

thanks to all of you on your advice--after speaking with ED at seaswirl I was sold-I am going with two of the 3/4 sea swirls on my 190 gallon display tank--along with my remaining MP40 which i plan to run low to help the suspension of detritus. NEXT ?---I keep a glass top on my tank--I have a few jumpers-I will need to have new tops made and was thinking plexi-glass but decided that would reduce my lighting. Any companies out there that customer cut glass tops?

Ideas welcome.

Thanks

Bette

I have had one in operation for 3 years, no issues no maintenance. Love it! They do restrict flow a little, you can get educators or random flow nosels to increase flow
