So I have been out doing some crabbing this year with a buddy of mine (live in the PNW) and was thinking of scooping up a bucket of water taking it home getting it up to temp (runs about 56 degrees up here) and doing water changes that way? Anyone have experience with this? I looked around online and found some people that do it but I’m unclear of where they live, this water is definitely not tropical temps so I don’t know if that changes anything. It’s clean looking water we are pretty far offshore out crabbing. Anyway just curious.

I’ve always thought that would be amazing! But I just can’t do it or recommend it due to the possible and unforeseen variables like fuel or oil in the water. RO/DI and a salt brand of your choosing.

But they stay to the top of the water column. what if said water is gathered at some sort of depth. But my main concern is the water temperature. Is gaining roughly 30 degrees make a difference, other than the obvious. In theory it’s just salt and water ready mixed by nature but would I be killing off organisms or introducing something to my tank that shouldn’t be there?

Well that’s what I’m saying, the risk may not be worth the reward. There is no risk when you make your own water. (Unless done wrong lol)

I believe @PaulB just scoops water right out of Long Island sound or whatever body of water he lives near. Might be worth checking out his threads if your considering doing this. Where are you in WA? I might want to try and talk you into collecting some sea water for me, lol.

I’m in port Angeles. I’m going to do a lot more research before pulling the trigger, possibly a small test tank to determine if this is good or bad but I could really have as much water as I wanted at my house in under and hour. No rodi or salt purchase necessary.

That’s the key I think, being able to get out away from shore where there’s more pollutants. I’m down in the south sound and I wouldn’t trust anything around here. You’re in a much better spot. I say collect it, throw it in a tank with a filter, test it and if it’s within parameters use it. Definitely test it first though, maybe an icp just to see what’s in there first.

I have everything to pull that off. When we drop pots tomorrow I’ll scoop 5 gallons and set up a test tank.

I know this is a little off topic but I just passed through port angeles a few days ago when I was on my way to Olympic ntl Park.

I live just above the fancy new national park sign. I drive by there 3-4 times a day, probably saw ya getting your picture taken (most people do). I love it here.

I live in Long Beach Ca and some of the LFS buy water from the ocean that is filtered. I’ve been using it for about a year now. And my Fish/coral are doing great...

Looks awesome! I’m planning on running separate tank with just water in my garage. Bought a 20 gallon tank yesterday, I’ll collect the first five gallons for it tomorrow when we drop our crab pots. And test it out. I won’t put any in my DT until I know for sure.

The filtering part is the key there.. how do they do it? Have you had the water you get from them tested. I can’t say there is anything wrong with it. Your tank looks great.

Not exactly sure but “The Aquarium at the Pacific” uses it...
I’m gonna look into it tho...
Thanks for the compliment!

Not saying it can work, but years ago i had a 200gal fowlr in san diego. Scripps institute set up some filtration equip on a dock at their facility and invitedaquariststo bring buckets and get waterfor free. I had a bunch af show size tangs, Angel's, puffers etc. Was great for about 7 months, saved a bunch on salt and I thought it would be great to into real seawater with its biologics and trace elements. Then the day after a 30 gal water change, I noticed fish behaving strangely. Within 2 hours or so some of the fish started to have rotting flesh falling off of them, and 10 hours later the whole tank was dead. Turned out to be most likely some form of red tide. I was crushed. Just be careful.
