Sea whip

i was feeding my tank when I noticed this spot on my purple sea whip. What should I do? Should I leave it alone or cut this piece off? I don’t want to loose this beautiful coral.

Just noticed it today. Do t think it was like that yesterday. I’ll have to look back at the pictures I room. I did notice a small hermit crab crawling on it last night.

Aha! That was going to be my next question, if you had any critters having late night "snacks". I would assume that's what happened.

Well dang. Any way to stop that? If not I’m not against giving away my hermits. I only have a few left. Lol. I had a lot but they were killing my snails so they had to go. I won’t have them kill my coral. Should I cut that piece or leave it be?

I feel like I need to move Violet out away from the corner and the rocks. Just not looking forward to being attacked my my 1” clown fish. Lol

I'd leave the branch for now. I'm not an expert, but since it was probably munched on, it's not going to harm anything the leave it there. Maybe someone who knows more can chime in.

Gorgs need high flow to prevent algae buildup from killing a branch like that. Was probably already ailing there when u got it. I would trim the affected area and make sure he has enough flow to push him around. One of my favs.

I added a power head just for the sea whip. It is swaying good. How do I trim it? I’m new to coral so I’m super nervous. Lol

I use bone cutters but a sharp clean pair of scissors will work as well.

Ok. Why does my little clown make me so nervous to stick my hand in the tank? Lol. Do I remove the coral from the tank to cut it? Do I trim past the brown spot and take a little purple?

Because clowns can be viscious!! Lol
Trim just down to the purple and if the cutting utensil is sterile u can do in tank if not take it out quick it will be fine outta water for a second.

Well it’s trimmed and moved. Took me a bit to get it to stay standing up. But now is in a good position with good flow. Had to put a rock at the base to keep it from leaning over against the other rocks. Hoping it’s ok. It’s a good thing Princess Leia is little. She was attacking my hand viciously. I felt her little teeth a few times. Lol. I think I need to change her name to Princess B***h. Lol. Jk. Gotta love a girl with spunk.

Well it’s trimmed and moved. Took me a bit to get it to stay standing up. But now is in a good position with good flow. Oh my god! Mine is named leia too! And her mate is solo, solo is the one to watch though, he loves to nip when you are close to his nem

Oh Leia about jumps out of the water as soon as she sees my hand above the tank. Luke , even though he’s a little bigger, hangs back and just watches. They are both so small still. Just maybe over an inch. Lol. Btw I have a pistol shrimp named yoda and my watchman goby who I lost was named Goby- Wan Kenobi. Lol. Heck I named my sea whip Violet. I name everything. Lol.

Lol! Love it. The kids name a lot of ours. We have a coral banded shrimp in with Leia and solo I have named Vader as he annoys them all the time. They attack him and nip his antannae. Also have a bicolour Blenny named Lenny- short for Lando lol
