I have used these for years in qt tanks and have never had any problems with them, until recently.

I used two new badges on a newly set up qt and they both showed grey. I added fish and after a few days they both stayed grey. I purchased two new ones from different vendors, same result, grey badges.

Has anyone else had this happen? Did these badges change?

it shouldn't be grey, it should be yellow. You've had four badges that were grey in the center instead of yellow? What kind of lighting are you viewing them in?

+1 I've never seen an ammonia alert badge turn grey. Defect perhaps? Are you sure its not the pH badge?

I have had a case where the badge failed to indicate ammonia one morning, and the naso tang that I had in QT was struggling. After checking almost everything else, I checked ammonia, and it had spiked. The badge never showed anything. Maybe it was a bad badge (fresh from amazon) but since then, I don’t trust them. Me, I “don’t need no stinking badges” ...

I know it shouldn't be gray. Have used them many times before and never had any reliability issues.

Does it still look grey if you light it from behind?

I too have used these for years without this occurrence. I’d be curious to hear what you learn! :)
