Am considering adding denitrate to my sump and am wondering if it would be best to put it in a reactor with very slow flow, or to put it in a bag in the sump with little or no flow, to act much like a deep sand bed. I've got to get my nitrates down!
Obviously, the latter would be the simpler method.

Reactor is more ideal, but it won't matter. However, I really wouldn't expect it to be very effective as your main nitrate reduction method unless you have a low bioload. Have you ever tried dr tim's waste away? I have had luck with that bringing nitrates down.

I have a huge bioload and am seeking to mitigate it. I am considering adding SeaChem denitrate to my sump. My tank did not respond very well to nopox.

What happened when you added nopox? Also, have you tried a refugium (and if so, with what light)?

I’ve used nopox and Am back on it now. Never had any discernible results, prob because my nitrate is that high. Some of my Leathers do not like it at all.
I run a Tunze algae reactor, run gfo 24/7.

So one thing we have had good luck with at work (I work part time at an lfs) is biopellets seeded with dr tim's waste away. The biopellets are on a 800g fish system with no water changes at nitrate is less than 10ppm. It is similar to nopox but you don't have to dose daily which is nice.

Thanks for the reply. Think I am going to continue with no pox-leathers hate it-and run a few liters of de nitrate in a reactor and see how that goes. Only heard good things about Tim’s products but will prob seed with Microbact 7 from Brightwell

I wanted to add that I think if you dose the nopox directly into the reactor, that might help. If you are trying to make it anaerobic, try continuum's bacter gen md. That is from the sister company of brightwell and is a bottle completely made up of anaerobic bacteria. You can dose them into the reactor and let it them attach to the media. It will better suit your needs if your goal is to seed an anaerobic reactor.

I picked up a media reactor that should hold 2 liters of denitrate and ordered Bacter Gen MD today. Thank you for your advice.
