Hi can I take a 5 gallon jug of tap water I live in NYC and add the seachem prime and use it for water changes it said 10 drops for 5 gallons thanks for any feed back
Should you? Nah, I would look into RODI systems or get water from a LFS. Seems to be the consensus but I lack any knowledge on the risks of using tap. I used distilled from the grocery store for the first 2 months of having my tank up but tap will contain phosphates, nitrates and other dissolved solids which can vary significantly depending on water source.
I’m in westchester and I’ve done it before in emergencies before I had an rodi. That said, I really wouldn’t recommend it for anything other than emergencies. Just because our water is good doesn’t mean it’s perfect.
Edit: my tds usually reads around 40 yours should be similar
In any case, you should invest in a TDS meter any way. They're cheap on Amazon. Check the TDS coming out of your tap.
I'm in CA and the water here sucks butt. I get 200-300 TDS (real bad) out of my tap water. Going through RODI, I get it down to 15-20 ppm. With RODI or DI only water - it's TDS 0ppm.
You just never know what's in the water. It could be good minerals and other stuff that won't hurt, or it could be really bad junk that'll accumulate in your tank. Minimally, use RO or at the very least BRITA or PUR filters or something.
I'd suggest a zero water filter pitcher if you are looking for something for top-off without having to do a full RODI system. That gets you *ALMOST* as good as an RODI filter without a huge investment and without taking up too much space.
