Can Seachem Purigen interfere with cycling? Week two and remembered I brought it over and is in my return bag.

From the product description:

"Helps control ammonia, nitrite and nitrate by removing nitrogenous organic waste before it can release harmful compounds."

I wouldn't use it during cycling, regardless if it affects the cycling process or not; it's simply not necessary... just my .02, but I would imagine it's preventing your bacteria from colonizing to the fullest extent by removing the necessary elements to perform a successful cycle.

Welcome to Reef 2 Reef

JMO...
But I don't like to skim or use any chemical media while I'm cycling.

I like to keep all the goodies in the tank to achieve a good and deep cycle.

How are you cycling?

It binds organic matter. I don't think it will impact cycling much unless you are cycling by adding organics that you hope will decay.

That said, I don't see any benefit to using it during cycling, and wouldn't waste it that way myself.

I cycled with Dr. Tim's and then seachem stability every day for over a week. Live sand and live rock. I moved the sock over from another tank because the installed one on my sump was tiny during set up and I was not paying attention until i was messing with my Marine pure Biomedia block and noticed it was in there and felt dumb. just was worried i was selling myself short this whole time.

I would not use it ever. It alters ammonia and nitrates and you would not be able to properly test for these parameters anymore. When the filter is about to dye may get swings in parameters.

I would start the product after a couple weeks down the line, maybe after the cycle is done, right before you add some fish

Sorry, that is not correct. It does not "alter" them, and even if it did bind them directly (it doesn't, at least from seawater), you are not getting any sort of "false" reading. There would just be less in the water to detect (which is presumably the goal).

Purigen binds organics and you might see a reduction in nitrate since you are potentially intercepting organics and removing them before they break down to release things like ammonia which can be converted into nitrate. :)

Perhaps you are thinking of Seachem Prime? That does "alter" ammonia, although I don't consider that a problem since it also made it less toxic by the same amount.

Thank you Randy for clarification.
