I have two hippo erectus for about a year. Just recently I noticed one of them appears to be developing what looks like air bubbles in the tops of both eyes. Has anyone ever scene or heard of this before?

It sounds like it might be gas bubble disease. Can you tell us about the tank setup including temp and parameters? Would you be able to QT?

I have attached some pics. It looks like it could be a glare from the glass but those are actual air bubbles inside the eye. Looks like they may pop!

Temp has been constant around 78. Just noticed it after a water change. I always use the store bought water. I have heard of that but never seen it. I didn't know it could effect the eyes. Is qt necessary? I was under the impression it was a situational thing and not a true disease to speak.

Is there anything I can do assuming that's what it is? Can they live with it?

Great thank you! After some research I learned if caught early enough and if it is solely from gas super-saturation, it is reversible. I am bringing down the temp and increased the water flow pointing the jet up to cause an increase in gas exchange. According to the research the symptoms should subside on their own. I will keep you posted. Thanks for the help!!!!

So it has been about a week. I dropped the temp and increased the water flow to increase the gas exchange. There does not seem to be any change. She is still eating and swimming around but I feel really bad. I feel like she is looking at me thinking... y aren't you helping me. I am considering a small needle but most of the bubbles are around the eyes. Any suggestions?

I would be extremely concerned about causing trauma to the eye. I will try to do some digging to see if I can find any answers.
