I acquired a gently-used 45g Seapora frag tank yesterday. Its dimensions are 48”x18”x12”. There are two holes drilled on the bottom of the aquarium, within the overflow section — one 1-1/2” hole and one 1-3/4” hole. The 1-1/2” hole, which is for the return, uses 3/4” PVC. The 1-3/4” hole, which is for the drain, uses, what seems to be, 1-3/8” PVC, which is then reduced to 1”.

I want to replace the plumbing that came with the aquarium so that I can learn how to plumb a tank without always having pre-made plumbing kits, which also came with my Waterbox. Also, the plumbing feels cheap, and I’d like to get rid of the bulkheads that are barbed. You can see the barbed bulkheads in the photos below.

So, I did some research, and I came across a reference page on Bulk Reef Supply’s website that provides guidance for correctly selecting bulkheads. I deduced that I will need one 3/4” bulkhead (return) and one 1” bulkhead (drain). They will allow me to utilize hard-plumbed connections out of the bottom of the tank rather than having to use soft tubing.

Now, for the Durso standpipe. The PVC that comes out of the T-fitting seems to be 1-3/8” and is then reduced to 1-1/2” via a fitting. The bulkhead is also a reduced, which goes from. 1-1/2” to 1”.

With that information in mind, my question follows:

Can I make a replacement Durso standpipe with 1” fittings since that is what it will be reduced to at the bulkhead, or is there a reason to use larger fittings and reduce the diameter before, or at, the bulkhead?

Im guessing that the reason the pipe is larger then reduced is:

1) they found the 1" screen they used restricted the flow too much and went with a bigger dia. screen of the same type
If you look at the duriso site their screens are much longer allowing more flow

2) they had some sort of noise issue and tried to fix it.

I’m surprised that they used the screen that was provided with the plumbing; it’s very small. I’d like to get a larger one anyway.

Well there you have it. I have only made them with 1 1/2 or 2 " inch bulkheads and had no issues.
So 1 " bulkhead does need the bigger pipe according to the site. Learn somethin every day.

What did you do with the old parts of the seapora pluming ? Im interested in them.
Thank You

For the suction line. How far down do you place the top of the tee where the hole is? In comparison to the overflow?

If you’re redoing the plumbing on this tank, give some thought into changing the plumbing from a Durso to a Herbie. It will require drilling an additional hole for your return or having the plumbing come over the side. I changed up my frag tank from Durso to Herbie and couldn’t be happier with my decision.
