Hello everyone! I was wondering if anyone has used or heard of the filtered sea water tap at UCSD scripps pier? I was told by numerous people that is the same water that the birch aquarium uses for their tanks. I was thinking of using it for my the start up of my tank.

The tap is now at the NOAA Fisheries Science Central up the hill from the pier. There’s currently a smelly plankton bloom along the Del Mar/ La Jolla coast. So, I wouldn’t use the water until the bloom clears.

Thank you so much !

I used to live in San Diego and when the reef club did a behind the scenes tour of Birch, one of the curators there recommended against using the Scripps water for a reef tank and I agree. He said they always have to buffer up the salinity and alkalinity and you have to worry about runoff when it rains and algae booms etc. Plus the added effort of transportation and storage. IMO much easier and safer to just make your own. And you know, the Scripps water is not processed at all. It's just got a sand filter at the end of the pier and that's it. So if you quarantine it kind of defeats the purpose.

Thank you for the info!
