Hi - I have been running my tank for approx 6 weeks and added my cuc last week. I have this growing on the rock and I am not sure what it is and whether it is good or not? I know I have some GHA too but wondered about the seaweed - one type is green and the other is brown.

The red stuff looks like gelidium. It's a stiff red algae. Manual removal with tweezers is your best bet, but it should starve out if you get your nitrates and phosphates low.

I'm not sure what the green stuff is. Looks like some kind of macro algae.

Green looks like Ulva, AKA "sea lettuce", and is, indeed, a macroalge.

Wondering if the red isn't Gracillaria?

Both can be food for herbivorous fish, and from what I've heard, Gracillaria is particularly popular with tangs . . .

Don't let it get out of control, but consider letting some of it grow - and consider moving some to your refugium, if you've got one!

Indeed it could be. Probably needs to grow out more to tell; they are pretty closely related. Interesting fact; both are harvested for the production of agar, that gelatinous stuff you grow cell cultures on. Both apparently are also tasty to vegetarian fish.

Im trying to grow macroalgae on the rocks in my aquarium but its a slow process since I recently recovered the tank from a green algae boom, not shore how I can increase the growth of the current macro algae I have in it right now...

Thanks for all the replies - I am very new to marine - have had it cycling for approx 8 weeks and had some cuc in for about a week as well as a couple of corals. I have a sea hare who is chomping away on my gah but has left these 2 alone - it is only a 95 Litre so I won't be able to get a tang. So as long as it doesn't get out of control - it is a good thing to have in my tank?
