Seeding New Tank/Refugium

I just ordered some from reef cleaners. I'm new at this so I can't tell you if their pods are better or anything. But I can let you know how it goes when I receive my order.

Thank you. I was looking at using reef cleaners for a clean up crew package. So I would like to know how, your experience with them is.

I ordered my dry rock from them and that experience was great. But I haven't ordered anything alive from them. I prefer to buy any alive in person if I can to not have to ship them.

Yea I just ordered a couple of their barnacle clusters to see if I can do anything cool with it but have not ordered anything live either. I will see how they do with that before I make a decision on live orders. Unfortunately for me I have at least a 30 minute drive to get to a good LFS that carries a decent selection of stuff so online actually becomes a bit more enticing.

I have a 1 hour drive to a decent store and 3 hours to a great store but I still prefer it over shipping. That being said most people do fine ordering online. I just don't mind driving the distance :).

Yea luckily I am only a little over an hour away from a great store in WWC. So I don't mind driving over there for coral or fish but something like a basic cleanup crew I really cannot justify driving two hours rounds trip for hermit crabs. At one hour of drive time I start to debate if hermit crabs are worth it. Again for coral and/or fish yea I will definitely drive.

Thanks for the reply. I saw algae barn on here but wanted to get some others feedback to see if they knew of any other place.

Hi Joel,

We would love the chance to seed your tank with copepods. We sell juvenile-adult tigriopus and tisbe copepods perfect for seeding new aquariums with a copepod population. Right now, we are having one of our largest sales of the year where all of our products are Buy One Get One Free with coupon code "MayBOGO" so this is definitely a way to seed your tank at half the price. If you have any questions please contact me directly via email at [email protected] or phone at 772-444-PODS (7637). Im always available to offer advice as well. It looks like you have a great setup here and hopefully we can be part of your success. Thanks!

I have a newer tank with wanting a mandarin sooner than later. I have a 75 DT with a 35 gallon sump. The system is a little over 3 months old. I used Algae Barn and would not go anywhere else. Their service is great and their product is awesome. I ordered twice from them with the BOGO sale and ordered it with their Ocean Magic phyto blend to feed the copepods. I went ahead and got my Mandarin a week ago and he is healthy as can be. So all I did was add their 3,000 copepods once in March and once in April and dosed the phyto blend. I only have live rock in my sump with Marinepure spheres and a brick of Marinepure. So far so good.

Do we add two to the cart and use code maybogo or one and you add the second?

That is a really good deal. I will definitely look into getting some.

aquarium depot every once in a while will have a buy 1000, get a 1000 free offer for 19.99. I just bought 20,000 pods, for 199.00. its a mix of amphipods and copepods. I also did the algae barn for 24000, pods for like 150. I have 2 mandarins I just added so we'll see. I got one to start eating brine shrimp that I get at the local fish store, and I always squirt some their way. One has already died, the female. she wasn't eating. the male is still fine, I just got another female but she's in isolation and still not eating yet. they are really finicky even if you have pods, and live shrimp. good luck.

i thought the buy one get one free was just for the 3000 pods. not for any of the other packages. I just bought the 24000 pod package for $150 and could not get it to take the coupon and double my order. did I understand something wrong, do something wrong? can you help fix this? I think the order shipped, but have not received it yet...

I never seeded my tank with any pods and I have had a mandarin for about 5 months. I add plankton to my 3 gallon refugium that has Chaeto with a light that's on a reverse lighting cycle. Also used some live rock. I can also visibly see amphipods swimming around.

LiveAquaria.com has a Refugium Starter Kit. Complete with 4 different algae and two types of pods. You can also purchase a diverse cleanup crew from them. (Mine delivered this morning).

I've purchased amphipods a couple of times as well as some clean up critters from getyourpods.com Was very satisfied with both orders. They currently have a 1,200 pod package BOGO at this time.

I have used reef cleaners for tons of things they are great and the owner replies to you pretty quick if you have questions or issues. I've had him call me before due me messing up an order and getting things which would possibly harm each other. He helped me correct it over the phone and threw in extras of thing every time I've ordered from him. Say you order 20 of some kinda snail and you get it with 25-30. Great company and also in Florida

I've used reefcleaners.org, algaebarn.com, floridapets.com, and as mentioned above, getyourpods.com for various 'pods' and critters. I've been happy with all these. I prefer to order from algaebarn for copepods, and getyourpods.com for amphipods (and if also ordering marine plants/macroalgae, then floridapets.com... also live-plants.com from marine plants/algae). I've used all these and they're all good, its just that I'll pick and choose among them depending upon what I need and what they offer in order to reduce shipping costs. I've learned to avoid some others -- I'll refrain from naming them here as I'll only give positive recommendations.

If you have any local buds with an established PEST FREE tank I would use a scoop of their sand, and leave a rock in their tank for a week or two to seed it with their pods.. I've never Bought seed pods.. My fuge looks like an ant farm with only those two things.. Time is your best bet- just as others have stated.
