Hi Everyone - I apologize for the long wall of text.
I've been debating changing my aquascape for months and I've finally decided to go for it. My tank is about a year and half old although some of the rock is older as it came from a previous tank. This is a 90 gallon display and 30 gallon sump. My aquascape is currently two island of roughly equal amounts of rock. My middle chamber of the sump is a refugium with about twelve 1 lbs. ceramic bio rings. These are all at least a year old. I also have various bags of filter floss that's been sitting in my aquarium as I was considering starting a second aquarium. I plan on eventually removing my entire right island in the display.
My plan is to use left over dry rock from my initial build and create my ideal aquascape . After everything is completed, I would let it sit in my brute trash can that I use for waste water during water changes. Waste water would be rotated from the trash can every time I do a water change. I would also add a few bags of ceramic rings to the trash can to help seed the new rock. I plan on letting it sit for three months before removing the right island and adding my new rock formation.
I was considering removing my protein skimmer temporarily once I add the new rock and fill that chamber with the existing live rock that I would be removing from the display. I could also add a realistic amount to the return chamber. My main concern is my Mandarin that has been doing great. I'm nervous that removing half of the LR is the display is going to have negative consequences for that particular fish.
My current stock list is as follows:
1x Kole Tang
2x Clowns
1x Fire Fish
2x Banggai cardinalfish
