So I was curious if somethings changed I found a few old threads from 2015 suggesting you need a $100 aquaculture license to sell to other hobbyists but those links are now dead and if you google "florida aquaculture license"the word coral one time but with no further context. When you go down just a bit theres no clear example of you needing a license to sell excess corals from your home. could someone possibly provide some up to date info on this?

Who Needs One?

All persons engaging in commercial aquaculture are required to obtain the certificate. Aquaculture products include: fish, shellfish, amphibians, reptiles, invertibrates, plants, and corals. The certificate number is required to be on all aquaculture products from harvest to point of sale. Aquaculture activities include:

  • Fish farming (including culture of species native or non-native to Florida and also including freshwater and saltwater species whether or not they are considered sport or game fish);
  • Importing non-native conditional or other non-native fish species (including tropical fish) for aquaculture;
  • Culturing freshwater turtles;
  • Culturing shellfish on submerged lands leased from the State of Florida;
  • Culturing liverock on submerged lands leased from the State of Florida.

Several agencies in Florida have been fussing with this for a number of years now, but as far as I know, no hobbyist has been picked on in several years. Back when I had a more sps dominant tank, I sold coral frags and small colonies all the time and never had any issues.

If you don't mind my asking, what part of Florida are you in? The SouthWest Florida Marine Aquarium Society (SWFMAS.com) has a member who stays very involved in what the state agencies are doing. You might go to their website and ask, if you don't get better answers here.

@Peace River breeds fish and may have a better handle on the subject.

IME If you sell fish or frags to your LFS in Florida then they will usually require you to have your documentation. Beyond that, you have the regulation, regular practice, and enforcement which are not always the same. IMO if you are selling frags out of your garage it is worth considering.

I don't really mind the $100 fee but I can't even imagine the process of examining someone's 40breeder for a license

Another thing to pay attention to is that the certificate is based on fixed year and not a rolling year. Unlike a FL fishing license which is based on a rolling year, the aquaculture certificate expires at the end of June.

after digging through a completely seperate website I did find that as well but it seems to be more suited for people growing against the shorelines of the state
