Seneye par meters any good?

I want to own a par meter not borrow one. I want to monitor water clarity and lamp health on a regular basis. I will be using metal halide and T5's

I could spend $600 on a par meter. That's nothing compared to the rest of the package but do I have to?
I am looking for honest feedback from the community.
 
Imho, I doubt a PAR meter will be super effective at “monitoring water clarity and lamp health”. PAR meters are really only intended to provide you with a ballpark measurement for specific spots in your tank (ideal for placing corals). I own an Apogee 510 and even with the pumps off, the numbers jump around quite a bit. Besides, T5s and MH have a pretty well established replacement frequency.

meh, Ive had one a while, the readings are okay, par meter is eh, better just to make sure theres no ammonia and to monitor PH curves
 
My Seney is very good. I use it to measure PAR and it matches an Apogee MQ-510.
It is important that the SUD is version 6 or higher.
I had a V3 and it was far from accurate and was replaced by Seney
 
Leaving a par meter in the tank means leaving to key it free of diatoms, sponges, and coralline. I find I only need to measure my par when I make changes. For example, before changing a t5 bulb, immediately steer the change so I can raise the fixture enough too have the same light level before the change, then once a week, for about a month, as the new bulbs settle into their long term output and I lower the fixture slightly.

I also find I need multiple measurements near specific coral colonies, to troubleshoot colour issues if a particular colony. Leaving a par meter in the tank 24/7 wouldn’t give me any useful data.

i have a seneye, and it works well. i connect it to a usb extension to ensure saltwater trickling down the wire will never make contact with the laptop USB port. I owned an apogee ages ago, but sold it when I got out of the hobby a decade ago. I didn’t get another apogee because they’ve gone up in price since and the seneye had a cheaper price.

The Seneye serves its purpose. I wish I had a handheld display and when I bought it, it activated as a freshwater unit. The retailer had to contact the rep, give them my account details, then I had to reinstall the software for it to work properly. I still couldn’t justify the price of the apogee at the time, even with the activation issue and the awkwardness of requiring a computer.

i used a raspberry pi running Linux with usb over wifi software for a bit, so that my desktop downstairs could run it 24/7 over the wifi. It was flaky, so I eventually took it down. The seneye was in the sump so coralline didn’t build up on it but it did build up sponges fast enough that I had to give it a good, careful cleaning after the one month experiment.

I wish seneye made a cheaper unit without the par sensor, just the ammonia sensor. Then I would run an ammonia sensor 24/7 without fear of the light sensor getting covered in sponges or coralline.

Seneye "HOME" doesn't have the PAR sensor but it's only like $10 cheaper on Amazon right now ... so,,, uhhh,,, that's strange.
 
I wasn’t going to leave it in the tank. Just use it as a meter from time to time.

I’m setting up a new tank and before I build the aquascape I want to fill it up with water and find my optimal lamp placement and grow zones.
The tank is 30” deep so it’s different from what I ran in the past. The reflectors for the metal halide are also different.

Thats good info on the newer versions of the sensor. Yes I watched a YouTube video showing wild readings not even close to conventional meters. It seems they worked that out.
 
Do you have to use a laptop to use the PAR meter function of the Seneye or could you use an android device to view the readings?
