Hi everyone! My clown loves his anomone but it keeps trying to get away! The anomone will go to the back of the tank or attach to the bottom of a rock, my clown will be upset because he will have a hard time hosting if it’s upside down. Any reason why the anomone keeps going to the back or upside down? There’s very little flow on him but not sure about his lighting preference. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hes not happy where hes at. An anemone will move around till it finds a spot it likes, and it is possible to that it doesnt appreciate the clown loving up on it. Let it wonder where it wants until it finds a spot its happy with. :)

Nem is bleached and likely came from a tank with sub par lighting. Need to acclimate it to your lighting.

Agree on bleached, and a bleached anemone can only deal w/ so much light, so they often hide or move to shady areas.

Mysis a couple times a week will help regain health and color, meanwhile maybe shade over it's area or ramp down some and watch how it reacts to that

Bleached you think? I’m not sure what he’s supposed to look I guess because he looks the same today as when I got him a month ago. He is definitely pestered by the clown no doubt about it. I guess I’ll let him go wonder I just love the fact there hosting and I’m afraid he will be under a rock tomorrow. Thanks for the reply [emoji106]

Maybe it's just me, but from every picture of a sabae anemone i've ever seen, they've all been white with colored tips. I thought this is how they always looked. Someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

There are no "healthy" host anemone's that are white, that is the lack of zooxanthellae they need to produce light into usable energy.
White will replaced by beige color w/ maybe some color highlights when they regain health.

Yes, there are tons of images of unhealthy anemone's out there.

That's an H crispa which aren't white except when bleached. They should be brown/tan.

This is what a healthy one looks like

This is the same nem when I first got it

We can agree to disagree. The sebaes I've kept never got tan in color, always a nice milky white with blue tips. I doubt my sebae would have lived in my old tank 3 years if it was bleached. I wish I had some old pics to show but it was many years ago.

IMO, that anemone is not bleached. That's how a typical white with blue tip sebae's look.

I've been keeping sea anemone's and clowns for 33 years now, that is my main focus in this hobby and what got me started.

That is an H. crispa, and 100% positive it is bleached, very bleached.

I got it, I just disagree. No worries here. Not trying to argue and I'm sure your knowledge is great in anemones.

Perfect example of what H.crispa should become as they recover, nice pics!

Yeah I don't wish to argue or ruffle feathers, just informing op so he knows what to do to be successful in keeping his anemone.

One of my petco rescues from long ago, much worse than this pic when I got it, beige is just coming in here after weeks of mysis feedings a couple times a week.

Same nem years later, sometimes you get lucky and they will have a purple beige color to them like this one, sometimes even more purple, but base is mostly beige color.

Wow, what a difference! Well done my friend.

One of many things I love about this hobby, the ability to never stop learning!

There are so many facets to this hobby, impossible to know all.
If this was an sps discussion I'll roll w/ the disgaree's! (Not my strong suit)
But I have rescued many a bleached nem over the years, and want to see others have success too.

While anemone's are basically half plant, half animal, they do not need to be fed, light is their main source of energy, but when they lack zooxanthellae they can not make use of that energy, and often they will hide from light, and often perish, so at this time this anemone must be spot fed, and not too big or too much as that can stress them.
Mysis squirted towards it 2-3x per week seems best to bring back to health
