Setting up a Fowlr Tank:

I'm not new to Saltwater Aquariums.
I've been out of the hobby for quite awhile.
I joined R2R form, and have gained a lot of insight, how the game has changed.
That being said, I believe, that I want to go the Fowlr route, with the possibilities of maybe adding corals later on! Maybe??
The reason, is that there are fish that, I'd like to have, mainly Angel Fish, even back in the old days, Angels have always been a ? Mark to Reef Aquariums.
I know, that there have been some Reef safe Angels, but again, you're taking a chance.
My question is; what is the bare minimum equipment I'll need to start a Fowlr tank?
I.e, sump, refugium,skimmer, etc
Also, are the parameters different for water quality, such as Alk, CA,?
Thanks for any, and all input from my fellow reefers!

I ran my Fowler's with a skimmer and a HOB filter. As far as parameters I very seldom checked them:rolleyes: for the reason there was nothing really consuming the elements except the coraline.
A sump would be good to have in place if you decide to go reef, then you do not have to cycle new equipment.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply! I'm definitely leaning on getting a sump.

One of the benefits of running a sump is the tank is less cluttered with equipment;)

Thanks again!
I've been researching on the internet as well as reading articles on R2R!
There's quite a few reefers who have Fowlr setups, that use a sump, skimmer and refugium.
I'm going to definitely setup a sump, to hide cords, and unsightly equipment, also cause, I want to have a mandrian dragon, and I know you have to have pods for them to eat.

Here is a article link on mandarin feeding. The author is here on R2R and goes by the handle of Paul B

I have both a 60g Reef and a 240g FOWLR. I run a sump, refugium and skimmer on both. I never check parameters on the fish-only but also am not crazy about testing for the reef. I test when something doesn't look right.

I love Angels too, which is what got me to go big on the FOWLR. I've got a Potters in now and just purchased juvenile Emperor and French Angels. I will likely swap them way down the road once they've grown and start over with small ones. I still plan to try and get another dwarf angel or two in there.

Hi,

Thank you for giving me a shout!
I'm leaning on at least a 250g Fowlr Tank as well.
I really want Tangs and Angel fish, and I definitely want an Emperor and a French Angel.
For a Dwraf Angel, I want a Flame Angel for sure.
I'm pretty torn on this, cause on one hand, I want the fish stated above, on the other hand, a reef Aquarium is calling me as well (I know Tangs are Reef Safe, but with Angels, it's hit or miss with a Reef Tank),
So, I'm looking at investing my money on a Fowlr Tank.
