Just saw this thread.

Per the last pic, of the heavy coralline live rock + accreted spirorbid worms appearing in the pictures, this looks to be a total skip cycle setup where adding any form of bac support after the fact is redundant/unneeded/waste of $ but not harmful.

Unless that last pic deceives, this was skip cycle rock from day 1, not going to spike ever. it appears the live rock was already aged, then moved into this tank?

We wrote a 17 page thread on testless cycling specifically for this very instance of aquarium building. seems this is a skip cycle build, the rock was as ready on day 1 as it was after more additions/measure/wait

Hi @brandon429 thanks for the reply but sorry im bit confused. I don't see any worms. These rocks are not aged. These are dry rocks. I'm not trying to skip the cycle, to be honest im trying to do the right opposite of that. It's super easy for me to skip the cycle. All i need is Dr Tims startup liquid and within 24hours my tank will be ready. I'm not doing that.

The LFS already sold me boidigest to speed up the process (not to skip the cycle).

Day one - added live sand, rocks, filter, added a small piece of prawn meat, added 1 vial of biodigest thats all. and now I'm waiting. This time onwards im not in a hurry to setup the tank because i want to learn the cycling process so that when I setup my new big tank i'd know what to do. Even if its gonna take 1 month i will wait..

Can you tell me what I am doing wrong? attaching another pic.

I see, I thought there were little white specs attached to the rocks looking like those worms that are shown in aged tanks stuck to the glass etc

Dry rocks are usually white, without pigment or coralline. That rock appeared to be coralline live rock going off pics, but if you bought totally dry purple rocks then cycle on agreed

Caribsea life rocks are dry + painted so it's def possible. That rock above looked red, like real coralline which is why I thought it was cured rock

It appears though that tiny filaments are attached or growing out of the rock? Are there things attached to the rock that waive in the water as it flows around? It may not be, couldn't tell due to resolution just curious

But one thing, yesterday while doing aquascaping i did break the rock part a bit and inside it's like off white color. that means this is a man made rock? See attached pic

Even in the vid it appears to show white specs/periphyton type growths on real live rock that look like the spirorbid worms, but it appears to be amazingly pigmented rock if it wasn't brought home wet that seals the deal.




never seen dry rock looking so diverse. Even liferock looks purple in pics but that's neat rock wherever it came from. Not sure on it's origin going off pics it's quality rendered rock however, enough to trick my eye neato

I can assure you that i hand picked these rocks and I'm 100% sure it was dry :) so i guess everything is going smoothly.. just a quick question.. in case if i see any algae or something can i add a hermit and a shrimp now or should i wait?
 
I prefer to lift out rocks and cut off the algae or kill it with cheat chems, not messing with the tank water or chemistry. Others will let it bloom and then wait or try to adjust water params to get back in line, you’ll have to choose which mode you like either is ok
 
Hi guys, brand new to reefing, just got my tank set up and wanting to start the cycle. My salesmen was very informative but im lost at the shrimp part, is it supposed to be a live salt water shrimp or a dead shrimp of any kinda just to start decomposing to start the cycle.

Hi @Goose91 I think it's best if you could start a new thread :) anyways just to answer your question, add a small dead shrimp/prawn - thats what i did. So decomposed food/shrimp will start the cycling process (by increasing ammonia level)

For my newest tank, I used all the live rock, some of the tank water and Probidio, then the rock in the sump was added and I added Pohks Zeo-Bak and Zeo-start
 
guys a quick question.. so i should maintain a 3-5ppm ammonia level for like 1-2 weeks, correct?
 
Hi Friends @ #reefsquad I have an update. So today i just measured my ammonia and nitrite level and i can detect Nitrite :O

I read online that it will take at least a week to detect Nitrite but within 4 days I can observe nitrite.. so right now im bit confused..

1) My ammonia level is bit low, but still i can detect Nitrate - what should i do? should i increase ammonia?
2) Am i doing something wrong? or do you think my bacteria growth is fine? (I used 1 vial of biodigest when i started the cycle)

I think you're fine. The ammonia in the tank will start to drop as the bacteria starts to convert it to nitrite. The nitrite level will continue to rise as long as there is ammonia to convert. When the ammonia level hits zero, the nitrite level will be at or very near the highest level it will reach. Meanwhile, another bacteria will develop and start to process the nitrite into nitrate. And the nitrite level will start to drop as the nitrate level goes up. Both of these bacteria will be processing ammonia and nitrite continuously from now on as long as the is a supply of ammonia to start with. Some rotting fish food, a small dead shrimp or some cuc (clean up crew) and fish eating the food and creating detritus that will degrade and release new ammonia into the system.

Then nitrate can be reduced through water changes which should be super easy in a small tank. Also having some kind of macro algae growing in the tank will use nitrate and phosphate in the water as fertilizer/food and thus remove it from the water. As the algae grows, you can keep it under control by harvesting some of it and thus exporting the nitrate and phosphate all the way out of the tank.

The thing is - it seems like for some reason my ammonia conversion is happening quite fast. I expected to see nitrite after 7-10 days only.

I just have one question.. like you said seems like right now my bacteria started converting ammonia into nitrites.. so should I add more ammonia (fish food/shrimp) or should I stop adding ammonia source now?
 
Given the size of this tank, I don't think you need to, ASSUMING that you will be adding a small amount of livestock soon. If you want to wait on adding any livestock, that's perfectly OK, and adding a tiny bit of ammonia or some fish food that will decay and create ammonia will help keep that first round of bacteria alive. Either way works.

As for the time frame, there isn't one. It all depends on how fast the bacteria develops and how much they have available to consume. I set up my current 40g cube with live rock from another tank and I had no cycle at all. I added some pure ammonia one day and 24 hours later I had no ammonia and no nitrite, but my nitrate level had gone up. So the bacteria were already there. If you use new dry rocks and dead sand and don't add any bacteria from a bottle, it can easily take 2 or 3 weeks to get the process rolling and a month or 6 weeks to get to the end of the cycle.

Also, just in case you don't already know it, after the nitrogen cycle is done you aren't finished. After the cycle you have anywhere from zero to 3 or 4 blooms of diatoms, hairy algae, other algae and other bacterial blooms. These are usually self controlling. That is to say, an algae like diatoms which are hugely common in the hobby will bloom and seem like a serious problem. But 'normally' in a matter of a few days to a couple of weeks this bloom will consume all of the food it is using and will die back to a much lower and easy to deal with level. Some of these blooms can be quite hard on corals, anemones, feather dusters and other immobile critters. So it's best to wait out this 'ugly' stage before you try any corals.

Thank you once again @Ron Reefman I'm not planning on adding any livestock soon. So I will follow your advice and add a bit of fish food 2-3 times a week. And then after that will slowly introduce my CUC.

diatoms, hairy algea all new to me :) Last year when I setup my 15G (my 1st marine tank) I completely skipped the cycling process. Last time I added live sand, live rocks (with bacteria) and salt water from the LFS so within 24 hours I was able to add all my fish/corals etc and never had any diatoms, hairy algea issues - it's almost 10-11 months now and that tank is doing great.

This time I purposely wanted to try something new - start from scratch - just to learn these things. That's why I used packed live sand (it's called Caribbean sand), Dry rocks (without any bacteria), Red Sea Salt mixed water (fresh) and the Biodigest. I didn't add anything from my matured tank. So now i'm trying to learn this cycling process :)
