Setting UP A Tank At My School!!!

Thank you. I am just going to add a couple snails and hermits. I have already added 4 snails and 2 hermits.
Maybe a little conch as well. They are super cool and relatively hardy. Plus they stand out since they move around differently than the snails. Will definitely keep your bed clean.

Can you postpone the trip for a week or so? Id keep ghost feeding and test the cycle first. Have your test kits come in yet?
Test haven't come yet. I can't postpone. I am busy for the next couple of weekends.

Then, unfortunately, I'd probably wait.. Could it be quarantined at home, maybe do a full quarantine, but at least until you are sure the school tank is ready?

I have a qt but I have a mandarin in it for my tank and I don't want to add anything that will compete for food. My LFS also qt their fish.

I still don't think it was the cycle that killed the fish and shrimp. All my parameters were perfect when I added them. I could very easily be wrong but I just have a feeling.

Yeah, but better to go by test results... How long have you been ghost feeding, I think it takes about 3 days to start getting an ammonia reading in an cycling tank but it can certainly shoot up quickly after that. I would still wait but I understand you are limited in access to the lfs..

Do you have a rock or any filter media that you can add to the school tank to give it a boost of bacterial filtration?

Well, all the rock to begin with was live rock and I used live sand.

Yeah, only thing is I've had live rock take 2 weeks to cycle, depends on how it was handled before it came to you, sometimes the bacteria has to build back up

You are probably right.

You are probably right.
I'd just hate for you to lose another one one, especially if it turned out the cycle was the reason.

Nothing good happens fast and all that..

I just looked at my calendar and I think I might be able to get to my LFS next Sunday.
I might have to do that.
This would be good to give you time to test the cycle and know for sure!

I always tell people that if I have only learned one thing from this hobby, it is that nothing good comes from rushing.

The tests should be here tomorrow so I am going to try to get into the school and test everything. Just so you know. I did a water change today. I don't know if that helps at all but I thought I would mention it

Thank you everyone. I think I am going to go to my LFS but just to pick up a skimmer. I am getting a reef octopus and I am super excited about it. I have a reef octopus on my tank and they are the best skimmers out there :D

That could possibly skew the levels to be lower than they actually are, if you can swing the trip next weekend just do that and feed and test during the week. [emoji106]

My test kits came in today and I am going to try to test the water later today. If I get the chance, I will post the results.

Everything looks like it is 0. I think I may have found the problem though. I bought a thermometer and it says the water temperature is 86. Is that enough to kill a fish and shrimp? I think it is a malfunction in the heater because I have it set 77 but the light is on which means it is still heating the tank. Do you all think that is the problem?
