Setting up another tank...Recomendations?

Hey everyone!

I will be setting up a new tank. Its a 40G breeder tank with a 20 gallon long as my refug. The things I need are, Power heads, Water pump from refug to tank and lighting.

If you could recommend what i get for those three things and how many, Id be appreciative

Powerheads I was thinking (2) Hydor 425.

Lighting I was not sure on. I want to do some easy coral and a few fish. LED or T5? No clue.

Pump...hmmm not sure the size to get.

Im just upgrading the space for my current setup.

I hate answering a question with another question but it will help others to give you ideas. Your signature shows a list of JBJ system, is that currently running?

The reason I ask is, are you having success with that current setup? If so, maybe you'd like to mirror some things from that build onto the bigger one. When asking what people recommend you will get a fast number or responses based on our personal preference and budget allotment.

My recommendations would be: I'm a T5 guy and use LED's to supplement for color and POP. I would recommend larger powerheads in a 40B, maybe the Koralia 750's. As far as a return pump, i'm a firm believer that you need more turnover in the actual DT vs the whole turnover of the system. If you're looking for a nice quiet and tried and true filter, you can't go wrong with an Eheim, maybe something around 3-4 times the turnover of the complete system volume.

Good luck and give us some specs on the current tank so we can get an idea of what your particular flavor is.

Well, I actually have had some issues with my current tank and one of the reasons why I am going bigger. I have a red slime algae issue I think now. Im hoping the bigger water capacity will help. But also going to do a few different practices too.

Im wondering if I should even try putting in my old live rock that I have now. Not wanting to let the algae thing transfer over to this tank.

My nano cube is just too small. I want more out of it. Im almost thinking about maybe doing a reef this time around. less about fish. So many options lol.

I have the same 40/20 setup now. I love it. I'm using a Sicce 3.0 as my return pump and a wp-25 for my powerhead. Unless you plan on SPS, I can't imagine needing more flow than I can get now. I'm on the lowest wave setting and I still have plenty of flow.

I also have reef radiance LEDs. I have the dm155s. It's an older model but they have equivalent ones on their site. Great value. I've got a growing clam, bunch of LPS and softies and a bta. All happy as can be
