So this article will be quite long as I’m going to go through my new tank build in hopes that I don’t forget any details! This will be happening within the next few months!

Display tank with equipment:

220 gallon reef ready tank on a metal stand I will be wrapping with wood. I think that I will be making the stand into shelves that I can store things under the tank such as books, spare equipment, food, and such.

I will be drilling in to the wall behind my tank and the overflow which is about 18” long in the middle of the back wall will flow down into the basement. This will have 2 X 1.5” overflows as well as 2 X 1.5” return jets on either side of the tank. I will do unions upstairs and downstairs that way it is easy to replace and clean the pipes if need be. The overflows will flow into a 2-3" pipe so no obstructions can happen.

The lighting will be the 5 X 165 watt Mars Aqua LED lights that you find on Ebay and Amazon. I have had these since I started my reef tank and they’ve done awesome with growth and coloration. These will be mounted approximateIy 16-18 inches above the water level for optimal spread. I will also be supplementing with 2 X ATI Coral Plus bulbs on a spare Odyssea fixture I had laying around. If I can’t find a canopy to hide all the lights, I may just have to build one again! These will be connected to a Reefkeeper controller for timing and that way the lights can be turned off if it ever gets way too hot.
For flow in the tank, I will use 2 X Maxspect Gyre XF 150’s (5000 gph each but will probably throttle back to 50-75%) linked up to the new controller that will control them both at the same time! This will ultimately be linked to the Icecap Battery Backup in case power ever fails!

Sump Setup:

Alright, so now we are going to move to the basement and look at some more of the equipment that I will be using and how some things will be setup. So the overflows from the tank will drain into a 120 gallon tank (4x2). This will drain with an overflow into a 300 gallon stock tank. This will be about half to three quarter of the way full ultimately adding another 150-200 gallons just in case any check valves don’t work the way they’re supposed to.

The 120 gallon tank will hold a 12” Reef Octopus Protein Skimmer with a bubble blaster pump (this skimmer is awesome and the only reason I’m not using it now is because it doesn’t fit in my sump!). This skimmer will also be fit with an automatic skimmer neck cleaner that will run for 10 minutes every day and I’m also thinking of adding a skimmer neck wash-down cleaner as well. The skimmer cup will drain right to a waste drain pipe and the wash down and neck cleaner should make it zero maintenance! This skimmer has some serious power! This tank will utilize an Eshopps Large overflow box which is 2 X 1.5” coming out of the tank via a Bean Animal overflow. This also serves as a decent sized quarantine in case any fish ends up being bullied or becomes a bully

This section will also have a Reef Octopus Biochurn 120INT reactor which I will run Dr. Tim’s Aquatic’s Biopellets although I do want to give Reef Octopus Biospheres as recommended by Marc Levenson as they don’t clump or float. Other than those two pieces of equipment, I will also just run BRS’s dual media reactor powered by a MJ1200 and just run Red Sea Reef Spec carbon for super clarity (I love this carbon!).

The stock tank will probably just hold another 100-200 pounds of live rock for the added filtration. This will also have a big ball of chaeto and dragon's breath macro algae. This will have a 165 W MarsAqua to grow the macroalgae. This will give copepods a place to breed and live and feed my chubby mandarin!

The tank has a drain at the bottom which will go right to my ReeFlo Hammerhead external pump (6000 gph with a max head height of 24 ft). This will tee off in multiple spots in case I want to add something in the future (e.g. Big skimmer, reactors, algae scrubber) and will go to the display tank, this will have a needle valve (after the output, never before the inlet) to control the flow.

Dosing, I will use BRS’s dosing which is Cal, Mag, Alk using a Jebao Doser. And for topoff, I will have a float valve drilled right into the stock tank so water level is always constant!

Livestock:

As most of you know, I am obsessed with TANGS! So can you guys guess what’s going to go in my tank? Large Angelfish! No, I’m just kidding, I’m going to transfer tangs I have in my systems now to this system. So livestock will include:
- 6-7” Naso Tang
- 4-5” Purple Tang
- 4” One Spot Foxface
- 4” Orange Shoulder Tang
- 2” Hippo Blue Tang
- 5” Tomini Tang
- Clownfish Pair (Stormtrooper X Black misbar Ocellaris)
- 2-3” Blue Mandarin
- 3” Purple Pseudochromis
- 2.5” Firefish (May add a few more)
- 2.5” Coral Beauty
I may have to split them up throughout the two tanks and stock tank but that’s not a huge deal!
Corals-wise I have been getting into SPS lately so I think I’m going to be going SPS dominant with a few of my favorite LPS being kept. My Zoanthid/Palythoa collection will probably be put in the 120 in the basement but dependent on flow, I will have to move some corals around.

Let me know if there’s anything I missed and what you guys want to know!

Update on the Sump Build!
I came home for Easter Break and did a few little things here and there!

I decided not to go with the 120 gallon refugium as previously stated because the room was becoming quickly limited after I decided to add the 300 gallon stock tank.

Now I will have the drain feed the 300 gallon refugium/display Reef and that will drain into the 150 holding the skimmer and GFO.

First, I had a 150 gallon stock tank full of live rock I got from my buddy's tank that he broke down. I had two little clownfish in the strainer for a few hours while I set up the 300 and I didn't want them getting sucked up by the skimmer or the return pump.

Then I finally moved the 300 down and started filling it up. Boy was that thing a beast! It was the size of a shallow hot tub! You can see the mess of wires I have behind that.

Speaking of a mess of wires, I installed Reefkeeper and I have a lot of wire management to do next time I come home.

Here's what the two sumps together look like with my father standing in front of it talking[emoji23] this was before they were plumbed together!

I threw one MarsAqua LED and a Par 38 LED bulb over the top to keep the coralline algae on the rock, grow the chaeto and keep the few palys and a bubble tip anemone that has been in the 150 for a while. There's also a few shrooms and some green slimer in there as well.

I actually really like the aquascape I have going on in the display 300 sump and I think I'm going to keep it, add a few tangs and keep it the way it is.

Right now there are 2 x 1.5 inch bulkheads connecting the two tanks and a strainer on the 300 side to prevent anything other than water from flowing into the 150. A float valve is plumbed into the 150 to keep water level constant (no need for an ATO) and a giant 12" Reef Octopus Skimmer with a bubble blaster pump is skimming the system.

Thinking about doing a deep sand bed in a storage container behind all the live rock that way it has the beneficial properties of a DSB while still being able to be removed if it needs to be replaced every few years!

This is what the tank ended up looking like at its peak early 2020. It has since been taken down and replaced with koi as that’s what my parents have the time and knowledge to take care of. I had lots of fun with this tank and learned lots about automation while I was at college. I had an apex in the basement sump and ended up plumbing the tank like so:

200 display > through the floor (I still don’t know to this day how my parents let me do that)
120 gallon (4x2) refugium/skimmer >
300 gallon stock tank (frag tank/fish timeout) >
Return pump (Reeflo Hammerhead/Barracuda)

Fish list (from memory/pictures):
Naso tang
Sohal tang
Yellow tang
Purple tang
Desjardinii Sailfin Tang
Magnificent foxface
“Regular” foxface
Multiple lyretail anthias
Multiple iterations of clown pairs
Melanurus wrasse
Yellow coris wrasse
Harlequin tusk
Coral beauty
Flame angel
Yellow Belly Hippo Tang
Blue mandarin

The tank eventually produced this OG bounce which is not in my possession anymore (it’s covering a 3” disc.

MY CURRENT TANK: (with some eye candy)
Now I have a 120 gallon tank in my small 750 square foot house but I’ll be ready to do a permanent tank build in the next year or two when I move so be on the lookout for that.

Here’s a few shots of my 120:

Be on the lookout for my future tank build. Toying around with the idea of a 8 ft 240 gallon tank built into the wall or peninsula style. I like the idea of having it in the wall and having a fish room behind the tank for my sump and maintenance area. I want everything very accessible so I’m more apt to keep up with maintenance. I’m sick of crawling under tanks…

Peninsula style is intriguing as there will be three different views. The same would remain true with having a fish room behind the tank to house the filtration etc. What would be the option to move water across an 8 foot span? MP60’s? I like how clean they look as I’m not the biggest fan of cords on the tank. Multiple Gyres up top?

Does anybody have any suggestions on where they would get a new tank? I would like glass. Something in the 7-8 foot length range. 2-3 ft wide if I go the peninsula route, and nothing over 24” deep. Wasn’t a fan of my armpit getting wet everytime I had to reach the bottom of the previous 220…

That 220 is beautiful! And that bounce is so pretty! And that stock list is nice!

I loved the tank and that bounce! I wish I was home more so I was able to enjoy it. I did a lot of monitoring with my APEX from afar in college and had my brother or my parents do the every day stuff (feeding/glass scraping) and the troubleshooting.

Yeah I hope to get a set-up like that to watch my tank while I’m off at college, but I don’t think I’ll ever justify getting an og bounce lol! How did you even come across that?

I got a small 3/4” frag and it grew out to that over the course of 2.5 years. I have a small one again that I’m hoping I can grow back out to look similar to that one. Let me know if you ever have any questions. I’m happy to help!

Ah that’s pretty neat! Around how much did that run you if you don’t mind me asking? I’m trying to get into mushrooms, but I’m sticking to ricordeas and discos for right now. Although I think a mushroom I picked up earlier today might be a bounce since it’s got bouncelike white splotches, when it opens up some more I’ll get pics. But honestly man that new tank is pretty sick! I’m excited to see your next one!
