Hi All,

Sorry for the silly question but i just bought my first tank and I am setting it up.... It's not huge, first chamber is the biggest so I plan to make it for my refugium, however the second chamber after the bubble trap is a bit smaller so my question is can i place my protein skimmer and return pump in this second chamber? ( I Have a third chamber for my RO water top up)

My most ideal layout would be int this order protein skimmer, bubble trap, refugium and then return chamber.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thank You !!! (EXCUSE THE MESS)

IMO you have a nice sump with an ATO reservoir but it is not really optimal to include a fuge in it. Personally I would put the skimmer in the first chamber and the return pump in the second chamber after the bubble trap. Good luck with whatever you decide! :)

Agreed with peace river. Skimmer needs to be in first chamber because that’s the only chamber with set water level. That second chamber is too small for any skimmer I can think of anyway, but you haven’t mentioned your system size

That sump only has 2 sections. The one with the return pump in it will go up and down with evaporation and ATO activation so you cant run a skimmer in it since skimmers require a constant water height to work correctly.

I do see your points and thank you for your feed back, its just i would really want to have some chaeto grown some where how about a hang on chaeto compartment ?

or maybe just a transparent box with holes and chaeto inside it situated in the sump?

There are options that may work for you like the Reef Octopus Light Reactor/algae reactor, an IceCap Algae Scrubber (or comparable), or a DIY version of one of these. Good luck!

CPR makes a HOB refugium as well as refugium boxes you can put inside your sump. I've used them both with good results. They come in different sizes so you would have to measure to see if they would fit in your system.

Is this sump tank going under a cube tank ,, how big is the display tank ,, did you make the the sump tank or did it come with the tank ,, this is jmo ,, there isn't pretty much anything about this sump tank I like ,, I think the baffles in it are all wrong ,, not sure I would even think a bout a refugium in it ,, maybe its just a me thing though :(

Braves Fan, I bought this tank sump and cabinet yesterday second hand as its my first time starting a tank and i can't have a huge tank at the moment i needed something smaller as i might be relocated in the future.

The main tank is 50cm x 45cm x 45cm, yes it is a cube shaped tank. I appreciate your opinion as I too would like to have a massive aquarium one day and set the sump and baffles as i wish, however for now i have my first tank and i don't hate the sump, I think the ATO reservoir is pretty neat. Ill attach a pic, the sump is next to it but fits inside cabinet.
