Hey all,

Below are photos of my 75G build. I started 2 years ago with a 28G AIO biocube, then found myself outgrowing it after a year, so I bought a used 46 bowfront with a few scratches (that I thought I could buff out). But after many attempts, I couldn’t get the scratches to a tolerable limit. So a week later I graduated to a 75G Marineland.

This is my first tank with a sump and overflow box. My struggle lately has been with balancing the return pump and overflow box. Every hour or so I get a flushing from the overflow. I changed the stock Eshopps down pipe with a durso standpipe which reduced the gurgling and made my wife happy, but with that came the flushing. I did the airline with adjustment valve in the top but still cannot get it right. The pump
Is currently at its lowest flow rate and the airline adjustment valve is fully open. At this point I can’t figure out the root of the problem.

I’m open to try any suggesting. I have a ball valve for the return pump should I need to reduce the flow even more. The max flow rate of the overflow box is 300 GPH, and I can’t find the lowest flow rate on the pump when it’s fully reduced (but it’s rated for 715 so I’m assuming that’s with it fully open.

ANY guidance would be greatly appreciated!!!!

So basically cuz you only have the 1 drain line you have a partial siphon on the water. Your pump pumps water just enough to fill your overflow to create a full siphon. Than all the noise and sucking starts cux the water turns into a toilet bowl and shoots the water down. Lol.
Basically you need a smaller pump or a dc pump you can control. The ball or gate valve usually goes on the drain line. So you can raise or lower the water line inside your overflow.
Look at herbie or bean animal overflows. Durso works too.

Would you suggest the ball valve on the return side? Instead of buying another pump?

No ur overflow can't handle the pump. Even with the ball valve turned all the way almost. Either need a bigger overflow or a smaller pump.
The ball valve only will control and fine tune the water after use fixed this. Sorry. :_/

So if I put in a 300 GPH pump and a 300 GPH overflow I shouldn’t have an issue?

WHELP…..you were 1000% right, put in a lower rated pump and my sump has been flowing spot on. Thank you for your guidance
