Setup an IM 20g, then picked up a 75g...

So I was going to start my jump into a reef tank with an IM Nuvo Fusion 20 nano. Bought the tank, got some gear, got it setup. Went into my LFS today to pickup some live rock and a few more pieces of equipment. They had a used 75 gallon drilled tank with a stand (needs some work on the stand; I got this) for $165!

So I bought the tank.

Now I've got a 20g and a 75g. I've also got a 10 and a 20 from the PetCo $1 a gallon sale. Think I'm going to go pick up the 29g there for a sump. Should be big enough for a 75? Thoughts?

Needless to say, I'm overly excited and think I found one heck of a deal. The tank is in great condition. Should I run a bead of silicone around the edges to be safe? What should I utilize to clean the interior of the tank? Bleach and then rinse it with RO/DI?

Now I've got to rethink my entire plan.

Haha, sounds like a good score and a great adventure... My wife looks at me funny whenever she sees a new tank set up in the house...

I do not use bleach. If the tank has been dry for a couple months; anything 'bad' for the aquarium will have died. So I just blast with super hot (tap) water and let air dry. Rinsing with RO/DI sounds like a huge pain, lol...

Anyway, do a simple 'leak test' with tap water and see what happens. Hopefully there is no need to mess with extra silicone. If the tank is full for 24 hours and there is no sign of leaking, you are good to go!

I'm pretty lucky, my wife is super excited about the 75 gallon. Now I just need to figure out what to do with the 20g. It was a $400 tank! Guess I've got a really fancy QT!

Ok, I'll do as you suggest. I don't imagine any meaningful amounts of trace elements (the bad kind) will be a problem.

Leak test starts tomorrow.

If worried about metals, chemicals, bacteria, parasites, viruses, ethylmethylkillyaquick... you can clean the inside with distilled vinegar, wipe clean and air dry upside down. If it lives thru that, you can't kill it and the whole world will die from it.
