Severe Overnight PH Drop?

Small closed systems are prone to fluctuations. that is what makes nanos so hard to keep delicate species - don't panic that'll just cause more fluctuation

The algae may have had an effect in that at night yes they do release co2, as do all of the critters and even the bacteria in the tank, the larger your bioload the larger these may become

An interesting but often overlooked culprit in pH drops at night in the cooler months, is that our houses tend to be more closed up and indoor levels of co2 are higher in general. Higher co2 levels in the house air will add co2 to the tank and lower pH

I wouldn't do anything drastic. just watch it for a few days and see if it is the norm for you tank

Some find they need to draw air from outdoors in the winter for their skimmers

You can do a fuge in that one. The middle chamber in the back. Magnetic fuge light. Easy peazy.

I’m just not sure I need one, right now I’m using floss, Purigen, and Chemi-pure and it has kept my numbers stable up until now. Not sure I want o change it all up

That makes complete sense. I just did a water change (today was the scheduled day anyways) and am going to do some cleaning. Thanks for the good info!

Open the top and point your powerhead towards the surface. You're going to have to figure out a way to keep agitation on the surface or your just going to keep having this problem. Reach out to people with the same tank as you, and see how they deal with it. You asked about algae with the lighting. How new is your tank? Because ALL new tanks go through what is called the ugly stage. Which is where you're going to go through all kinds of different algae issues. It's part of the process.

How does the tank look?

It’s a little cloudy. I did a 30% water chance and ph is at 8.0, ammonia 0.25, nitrite 0, nitrate 5ppm. I didn’t get a chance to test Ca, Mg, or dkh before my son went to bed though.

The fish seem to be doing well, the leather is all shriveled up, but it has been like since I got it. That thing drives me nuts. The frogspawn and Xenia are totally unphased, the new lip of growth on my Lepto receded though and looks a little brown. Hopefully it comes back, hasn’t lost any color.

Got a pic before blues came on.
