I've always liked the Randall's, yasha's and wheelers. As far as shrimps go I'd prolly stay with the Randall's pistol shrimp because they stay small. The tiger pistol shrimp might get to big for an 8 gallon and stir up your sand to much making a dust cloud in your tank all the time.

Ok here's an update.
I added some corals and one rock nem from my 40 gallon tank.

I want to add that my corals seem to be doing great under the new Aqua illumination prime hd.

Also the water fountain works great at keeping the little tank cool. My house is 85 degrees today without my ac running and the tank is 78 degrees

Thats risky business. Keep an eye on temps. Has this tank gone through the diatom stage?

No it's still pretty new. On real hot days I've been running the air condition and I've been able to keep the temp close to 78

I would slow down on coral additions. When the diatoms do come about, let them fester. Don't go overboard on cleaning or you'll be fighting them for months.

I did think about that but wasn't sure of a good way to do it and I'm trying to keep the amount of equipment to a minimum so it looks nice and organized

Do it using a air lump like an underwater waterfall. Put a pvc pipe through the middle. And a air stone at the bottom. Through the top. Turn on the airpump and the air and bubble rising from it will suck the water through and out the top.

Thanks for the idea but i already added another small return pump to run the volcano/fountain and it seems to be working pretty good.

Just to be on the safe side, since it's possible, yes. Keep your lights going, because diatoms need the photosynthesis.

Thanks for your help I've only been in the hobby a little over a year so I'm still pretty new and appreciate all the advice I can get.

One more question, when the diatoms start should I still do my weekly water changes?

Yes, keep up with water changes. The silicates in the water column are what feeds diatoms. The idea is the exhaust the food source. So letting the diatoms feed while extracting(water changes) the silicates, your depleting the diatoms food source. So eventually they will die off.
