so I want to set up a shallow reef tank with the cool stuff I like but can't put in my big reef tank like feather dusters and Various small shrimp and any other odd ball things I might happen across. This system would tie into my larger sump and refugium that supports the big system. Having never done a shallow reef what are the cons of such if any? My other option is to use a 40 breeder for the same thing. Opinions please.
Thanks !

Well, if you tie it into your main system then you have two things happen. you get a big stable water volume with lots of mature filtration. you also lose the ability to pump up nutrients without effecting your main reef. food for thought on keeping them separate .

As far as tank, it sounds like you really want a shallow reef. do that if so. the money you save going to a 40b will not be worth it if that is not what you really want.

That's a great point about nutrients , I appreciate the thought. As for shallow reef, you are right. I need to go that direction. Guess my question is really answered. If anyone has other comments please feel free to add them. Would like to hear from anyone who has experience with a shallow reef and perhaps the other pros and cons. Thank you for the reply!
