Shallow vs Deep

I've thought of this question a lot,

Tall tanks seem to be better for coral IMO. The height of the tank allows for more rockwork and various levels of depth for different corals. As others have said, I find cleaning to be a bit more work and lighting can be a bit trickier for an odd sized tank like a 45 tall.

I love shallow long tanks tho, one of my favorite tanks is the 40 gal breeder. Clams look great in a tank like that.

Also, certain animals would like tall vs long or vice versa, such as sea horse who generally need a taller tank to breed properly.

I think the real answer is...get the biggest tank you can! :)

I tried both , I'm not so far into the tall tank but I must admit it has some challenges and I like those.
I learned as well.
I.e. i use to scrape my windows once a week....
Now that I have a deeper tank I figured I could try that magnet scraper I had for years... Oh My ... so lots of efforts saved there (even though the magnet is a job in itself)
Having a 30" tank is not 'that hard for me becose I have long arms and tools.
I used to be a mechanic's so I know how important having the right tool for the job is.
Overall I love tall tank becose everyone can enjoy it while standing up with face in the window. =)

Fish don’t really care about the height of a tank and that’s much more for our pleasure than them. I’ve never understood in the home aquarium why anyone would ever want to break above the 24” mark, 18” is the ideal height and it’s all about length and width IMO. 72x36x18 is a tank that is ideal for the home in which the aquarist shall be able to keep pretty much anything they desire.
