I am thinking about removing the sand from my 15 month old reef. Having some issues with it, algae, blowing around ect. If you removed your sand bed please share. Why did you remove it, how/method of removal, over timemor all at once, effects of removing sand good or bad.

largest sand removal thread :)

highlights: sandbeds can be removed without ramp down. Ramp down is the old myth about rocks needing time to take on bac for missing sand. doesn't work that way. we prove it by ripping out sandbeds for the last 6 yrs.

-its possible to skip a cycle in all cases or cause one. how we view and handle detritus determines all recycling.

-we didn't use ammonia testing and never will, not needed. this is accurate science, we show.

- we didn't need to buy bottle bac 'what if' doesn't occur where we are deliberate and dealing with wet rocks.

-there are reef tanks using so little rocks and + many fish that removing sand instantly might leave a shortage of surface area. we've never seen one like that, awaiting the first example

*one of the most important things you can do to prepare for outages is to remove your sandbed or rip clean it before it goes still. the bacteria/detritus loading is sheer massive and competes with your fish for critical 02, and, if those bac communities which are obligate aerobes die due to lack of o2, competing with fish, they'll begin a loss/ammonia cascade quickly.

if you want to give a reef the best chance of weathering storms and current extended outages, run the sandbed method above on it before the still

I would hope you look into Brandon's sand rinse. It was the missing variable that helped me beat Dinos. Would love to work along side you and Brandon to solve your issue!

Getting sand out of the aquarium became pretty easy for me, as I used a gravel vacuum to remove it. First, I suck the sand with the vacuum end of the machine to let the sand in with the vacuum. This way, the sand and water will go into the bucket to sink it to the bottom of the bucket. The process is pretty quick and can clog the vacuum. I just need to remove the vacuum and put all the sand and water inside the bucket and start from scratch. I also recommend adding more water at this point. Finally, when there is some sand left, you can use a glass dish to remove it.

Learning how to remove sand from aquarium is an easy thing to do. Whatever your reason is for the removal, it is essential to remove it correctly so as not to disturb all the living organisms in your aquarium.
