Good morning R2R. My wife and I are pretty upset with what has happened to our white spotted bamboo shark. She is about 9-12 months old and 8-10 inches long. Sometime during the day on Saturday it appears a fish (we think it was the racoon butterfly fish) picked both of her eyes out. What are our options here? She still eats but I don't think she can see very well if at all. Is it inhumane to keep a blind shark?

It is possible to train the shark to eat. Use tongs to place food directly in front of it. Sometimes you need to wiggle it a bit so the fish can sense/smell the food. Try to develop a routine the fish can learn. A gentle tap on the glass, same location in the tank, same time of the day/night, etc.

It's not possible to comment on the specifics of the situation without pictures.

I don't know about your specific species of shark, but many have poor eyesight and feed mostly by touch and smell anyway. Chances are it will probably be okay if it can't see.

If there is aggression in the tank though, that's a bigger issue than feeding. Sharks tend to be really sensitive to medication, so any other fish picking on it and giving it wounds or infections could be fatal because of how difficult sharks are to treat.
